Deep breaths, take deep breaths.
Max found herself fighting for her composure while at basketball practice. Tears were threatening to escape from her eyes, but she couldn't let that show, not right now. Her frustration was getting the best of her.
"Why did the coach put me with four freshmen?" Max whispered to one of her sophomore friends on the team.
"Oh my god, that sucks," Her teammate laughed. "She probably did it because you're an upperclassman, and you're a good teacher."
"I can only teach them if they want to be taught," Max pointed out how the freshmen were playing. "Right now, they don't want to listen to me."
"I know they can't do anything, but practice is almost over," Her teammate encouraged.
"Thank god," Max commented and picked her head up as the coach blew the whistle. All the junior varsity and varsity players gathered around. The coach announced that everyone would be scrimmaging against each other. Typically, Max is content with scrimmages, however, she is stuck with the freshmen today.
The redhead's team was playing against the seniors and a few of her fellow juniors.
"Cut through! Set screens! Let's move!" Max was desperately trying to get the freshmen to take action. All they had to do was move around.
"Do they know any of the plays?" A teammate on defense asked.
"Apparently not!" Max exclaimed, clearly frustrated.
Now the coach was watching them. Shit. Max thought. She felt she had to prove her spot on the team even though she was already on it. But how could she do well when the team she was playing with could barely play?
Once the ball got stolen again, the coach called for a water break. "Max, can I talk to you?" The coach pulled her to the side.
Max's mind started racing. What did she do wrong this time?
"I didn't realize I put you with all freshmen," Max nodded her head while listening to the coach speak. "They don't know any of the basic plays, so I'm sorry for not putting another upperclassman with you."
"It's okay, really, I wasn't sure if they knew the play or not." Max was shocked at the words of her coach.
"I know it is frustrating, but I appreciate you helping them out."
"Yeah, of course."
Fifteen minutes later, practice was over, and Max was driving herself home.
Max was on the edge of a complete mental breakdown. It had been an awful day, not only at practice but school too.
Once the shower was turned on, tears began bursting and flowing down her cheeks.
"You don't have time to cry," Max told herself and let the sweat wash off her body. She rushed to get dressed and then went to pick Lucas up from his basketball game.
While pulling into a parking spot, Max heard one of the worst sounds known to man.
"Fuck!" She exclaimed and got out of the car. There was barely any damage on the car next to her, but panic started to set in. Without thinking, Max got in her car and drove to a different parking spot. She was thankful that the scratches on her car could be wiped off but was once again, on the verge of tears. The redhead didn't have time to think about the other car if she wanted to see Lucas play.
Max ran into the school hoping to catch the ending of Lucas's game, but when she arrived in the gym, the crowd was dispersing and all the players were in the locker room.
