Max hadn't been back to Hawkins since she graduated college. However, there's a first time for everything. Even though she had been getting déjà vu the whole ride home.
Coming back to Hawkins after spending her college years in California reminded her of moving to Indiana in middle school. Except for this time, she didn't plan on making friends or staying long.
Occasionally, El or Will would call Max but otherwise, she had stopped communicating with the party, especially Lucas. Max felt she needed to start fresh, and if Lucas called her every day, she would want to go back to Hawkins, back to him.
Her mind was racing with thoughts, but they seemed to stop when she noticed a familiar house. It was Lucas's. She slowed down while driving past it. Memories began running through her head.
And her mind didn't stop. Late at night, Max was laying in bed, looking at the ceiling, and was tired of thinking. So, she went to the one place she knew was open.
The drug stores. More specifically, CVS was open all night. That's what she missed about the midwest, the drug stores were open all night.
Wandering the aisles at two in the morning made her feel like she was hiding in plain sight, and Max loved a good place to hide.
The redhead got in her car and drove. However, she noticed a bar was also open at this time. For once in her life, she decided to abandon her typical choice and turned to the bar's parking lot.
It was pretty empty when she stepped inside. A few groups of friends were staggered at tables, leaving the whole bar empty. The place had a rustic feel to it, with faint music playing in the background.
Taking a seat at the bar, she ordered her usual, a gin and tonic. The bartender kept giving her strange looks. It was annoying, and she was, quite frankly, creeped out.
"Is there a problem?" Max asked, a little irritated.
"Sorry, I just feel like I know you even though we've never met," The bartender admitted.
"And why is that?" She wasn't going to lie. Max was interested in his thoughts.
"You just look like someone my regular describes..." He said, deep in thought.
"Well, there are probably plenty of people that look like me."
"Maybe, but not around here. The red hair, vibrant blue eyes, and a bit of an attitude? That's uncommon in Hawkins." The bartender gestured toward everyone else in the restaurant. Max looked around and noticed everyone's brown hair and similar skin tone. "What's your name?"
"Max."
The man behind the counter's eyes seemed to bulge out. "Mayfield?"
"How did you know that?" Suddenly, Max wanted to leave. How the fuck did this random man know her last name?
"My regular-he uh talks about you. Max, you seem to be the way to his heart."
There was only one person he could be talking about, and Max knew who it was.
"Lucas..." She whispered in a daze.
"So you do know him? He's a great guy. He typically comes here alone and looks his worst, but he's always sweet to everyone. Including the trust funds and punishers."
"Sounds about right," She smiled at the thought of him.
"Refill?"
"Please," Max was going to need a lot tonight.
"Should I have not mentioned him? You look angry," He asked Max while handing her a new drink.
"No, it's fine! I swear I'm not angry, that's just my face," She laughed a bit to prove it.
"Good because he just walked in," Max froze at the bartender's comment.
Don't turn around. Don't turn around.
"Hey, Lucas!" The bartender yelled as Lucas made his way to the bar.
"Good to see you, Toni!" Lucas responded.
Due to the dark lighting, Lucas didn't notice the redhead at the bar. He saw someone was sitting there but didn't recognize who it was.
A beer was placed on the counter, and Lucas was quick to grab it.
Max was watching him in the corner of her eye just waiting for him to realize it was her.
"I thought you guys knew each other," Toni, the bartender, was confused on why they weren't interacting.
They both turned to look at each other and were at a loss for words. Max knew he was there, she just hadn't seen him in years. The two studied each other's faces.
"When did you come back to Hawkins?" Lucas asked hesitantly.
"A few hours ago." Max felt as if she couldn't open her mouth and talk.
Toni could tell they didn't know how to start the conversation, so he helped them out.
They reminisced on memories and made their way up to how their lives were now. It felt nice to talk to someone who knew so much about them. The whole night their hearts were pounding in their chests.
Once they started their conversation, they didn't know when to stop.
So this is bad lol. I've just been listening to a lot of Phoebe Bridgers recently so yeah. I hope you liked it. I know there wasn't a lot of Lumax but whatever. I might post again this week, but school, homework, work, friends, and family have been so busy recently.
