drivers license

after billy's death, max had a hard time. she needed an escape from everything around her. so, she flew out to california and stayed with her dad. she left abruptly and only told lucas that she didn't know when she would be back. she stayed there until her sixteenth birthday when decided she wanted to go back to hawkins.

I got my drivers license last week 

since her dad got her a car for her birthday, she decided to drive to hawkins. 

today I drove through the suburbs 

it had been a long time since she'd seen lucas, but they still stayed in touch through letters. she knew the party was in school, so she drove to the high school, hoping to catch everyone before they went home. and she did, right when she pulled in, the party and a new girl with her arm around lucas's shoulder came out. lucas kissed her cheek and then saw and made eye contact with max before she sped off. she felt as if her heart had shattered into a million pieces. max had experienced a lot of pain in her life, but this hurt so much more. she went straight home and locked herself in her room that wasn't as familiar anymore. throughout all the tears, max fell asleep exhausted. it wasn't until three a.m. that she woke up. knowing she wouldn't be able to fall asleep she hopped in her car and went for a drive. her mind kept replaying the moment she saw lucas and that girl bringing tears to her eyes once again. just yesterday max thought that lucas would be by her side that night. 

but today I drove through the suburbs

who's got the shiny hair, crop tops, and beautiful, clear face. 

she's everything I'm insecure about

he was the only reason she came back. there was nothing in hawkins but him. now memories of them flooded her head as she drove aimlessly. she broke out of her trance and realized everywhere she was going.

 can't drive past the places we used to go to 

hawkins middle school, the arcade, the entrance to the junkyard where she first opened up to him.

suddenly her foot pressed into the break. max was ripping apart everything in her glove box trying to find that letter. she spotted the pink paper and opened it. 

dear madmax,

when are you coming back? we all miss you. especially me. I just got my driver's license so maybe I can drive to you. my parents bought me a car, it's white. I know you think I shouldn't wait for you but what we have is forever. you are the only person for me. I really hope to see you soon.
