Ever since Will and El left, things got even worse for Maxine Mayfield. Having Billy gone made things difficult at home too. There wasn't a night where Max came home from hanging out with the party and Neil didn't hurt her. Neil even went as far as threatening to hurt the party if Max didn't stop seeing them. So, she did what she always does and shut the party out to keep them safe. Max even broke up with Lucas just to make sure he'd stay away. The look in his eyes was heart-wrenching. She didn't want to tell him why so she just left him there confused and heartbroken. But she had to do it, not only for herself but for him and his safety.

It had been months since she'd seen them outside of school. Max only came out of her house for school. Mainly because she thought that if she didn't go out then Neil would stop being so angry. Of course, she was wrong and she had the bruises to prove it. If I can just hang on a little longer then maybe it'll be okay. Max repeated that to herself night after night. That was until tonight.

Neil's boots were loud and trudging through the hallway with an empty glass bottle in his hand. Unfortunately, Max didn't have the strength to get up let alone push her dresser in front of the door. So there she stayed, curled up in the corner as Neil busted down the door. Tears were silently streaming down her face knowing that no one would be able to help her situation. He grabbed her by the foot and pulled her out from the corner. The first couple hits were always the most miserable. Using the bottle he hit her over and over again until the thick glass broke. Shards dug deep into her skin causing the most excruciating pain. The glass didn't stop him from continuing. One punch after another made her head spin and ache from the pain. By the time he was done she felt numb to the touch. Lying in the middle of her room with only her sports bra and athletic shorts on she made a decision. It was a risky decision but if she didn't do it one day she'd end up dead.

Max mustered up every little bit of strength and hope she had left in her. It was enough to stand up, grab a jacket, and leave her room. She let out a shaky breath she didn't know she was holding in when she saw Neil passed out on the couch. It gave her more courage for the next few steps out the door. Max started turning the knob when she heard footsteps behind her. It was her mom. Susan's face was stained with tears.
"Mom, I-"
"No, it's okay. I'm not gonna stop you. In fact, I'm going to encourage you to leave. Please go find somewhere safe please," Susan begged. Max began to cry knowing how hard this was for her mother.
"Maybe go to that boy's house. Just call me when you get somewhere and I'll drop off clothes or something okay?"
"Ok."
"Bye sweetheart."
"Bye, mom." Max opened the door and let the cold winter air hit her skin. She zipped up her jacket and began to walk.

Max found herself in front of Lucas's house. The cars were gone and the only light on in the house was Lucas's bedroom. Without thinking she did what she normally did and that was just walking in. The hardest part was the stairs with each step some of the leftover glass dug deeper. Wincing from pain she made her way to Lucas's door. With the slightest push, she saw his eyes widen at the sight of her. Lucas rushed off his bed to help the redhead.

"Max, what the hell happened to you?" He was concerned seeing the glass in her hair. Once she heard his voice she just collapsed in his arms knowing she made it.
"It's okay, you're here, you're with me." He moved her onto his bed and picked the glass out of her hair. The small blood stains on her jacket alarmed Lucas.
"Max, can you take off your jacket?" She shook her head with tearing still rolling down her cheeks.
"It's just me. I promise I won't hurt you. please?"
She carefully unzipped her jacket and let it fall to the ground. Max sat there feeling completely and utterly vulnerable. Lucas has seen some of Max's bruises before but nothing this bad. There were still small pieces of glass lodged in her stomach and a few in her back. Being careful not to press too hard Lucas used a tweezer to remove the glass. He ran her a bath and helped her to the bathroom.

During her bath, Lucas quickly put an oversized hoodie and some sweatpants in the dryer to warm them up. He grabbed bottles of water and snacks knowing she'd need a little something to eat and drink. Once he heard the bathroom door open he gave her the hoodie and sweatpants to change into. She came out and sat across from Lucas on his bed sipping some water he gave her. They hadn't talked much since she got there but they didn't mind. It wasn't until she piped up that a conversation started.
"I'm sorry."
"What are you sorry for?"
"I just barged in and probably ruined your night."
"Max you could never ruin my night." She just rolled her eyes and tried to hide a smile.
"So... do you want to tell me what happened?"
"Tonight or just in general?" She sighed.
"Whatever you feel comfortable with." She stared into his warm brown eyes and remembered why it was so easy to talk to him.
"Well I guess it got worse a couple of months ago, once Billy died," Max took a deep breath before continuing. "And a little after El and Will left Neil got...I guess more aggressive. He drinks more and is just so angry all the time."
"Why didn't you tell me? I could've helped."
"How? Lucas how?"
"I don't know. I just wish you didn't push everyone away." He said feeling a little hurt.
"I didn't really have a choice." Lucas gave her a confused face so she starting explaining more. "Neil threatened not only me but the whole party and I know what he's capable of. I didn't want to risk any of you getting hurt knowing that it would've been my fault," Max's voice cracked as she's on the verge of tears.
"So that's why you broke up with me," Lucas realized.
"I didn't want to but I would rather you far away from me and safe than with me and get hurt."
"What happened tonight?"
"Neil already left plenty of bruises this morning so when he came back tonight...I-I just couldn't put up a fight. Because of that, it was the worst one."
"And the glass?"
"It was an empty bottle and he used it against my back until it shattered."
"Can I see it...again?" Max turned around and lifted the hoodie so Lucas could see her back. His fingers traced all the bruises and cuts. Lucas decided to place a kiss on every gash, bruise and cut on her back. He did it gently but it was enough to cause a shiver to go through Max's body. Once he kissed every spot Max turned around and kissed him immediately. It wasn't like their normal kisses. This one was meaningful and passionate. They peeled away, keeping their foreheads together and staring into each other's eyes.
"Never push me away again Mayfield."
"I'm not planning on it, Stalker."
