Here's a little background information about this one-shot: (Sorry, it's a lot.)

-Forget basically everything about Neil from the show. I just used the name because it was simple and easy.

-Neil has three kids. Layla, Nathan, and Billy.

-Max has a healthy relationship with her mother

-Max refers to Neil as her stepdad even though Susan and Neil aren't married.

-This is modern-day (minus COVID), and there are time jumps to the past and future.

-This one-shot is almost eight thousand words, so it is a long one.

"I need you to hurry, please. He'll be back any minute," Max said desperately through the phone.

Max never thought her mom would find love again after her dad. Yeah, sure, her parents got divorced, but at some point, they truly did love each other.

These past two years, Max has seen her mom happier than ever. It was all because of Neil, her mother's boyfriend. This is one of the first boyfriends her mother has had that Max didn't hate. Max enjoyed spending time with Neil.

His kids were young, way younger than Max. The three of them were all between the ages of eight and twelve. Layla being the oldest and Billy being the youngest, leaving Nathan in the middle.

Susan recently informed Max that they would be moving in with Neil. Now, this was exciting to Max until she considered that there would be three kids at least four years younger than her running around. Luckily, Susan quickly reassured her that they would be living at their mother's house and only occasionally spend the night.

Thank god, Max thought. She loves those kids, but they can be a handful sometimes.

A month later, the party was helping Max move into her new house. With all those hands, it didn't take long for everything to be transferred.

"Lucas, can you grab the step stool!" Max yelled down the hallway hoping he'd hear. The only response was his footsteps coming towards her new room.

"Woah, you've already hung all this up yourself?" He asked looking around at all the shelves and pictures hanging on her walls. She just nodded her head and took the stool out of his hands.

"Could you hand me that little shelf?" Lucas got the small white plastic shelf and stared at it for a second.

"What are you going to fit on this?" He laughed.

"They're for my records. I have the perfect few to display on my wall," Max said very concentratedly. Lucas had never seen her this focused. He noticed her eyebrows scrunch together and the tip of her tongue fold up to her lip. She carefully leveled the shelf and then used a drill to screw it into the wall. Max repeated this process for 6 shelves, and Lucas' eyes did not look away for a second. "I can feel you staring at me," She laughed stepping down from the stool.

"I was admiring you." Max rolled her eyes and stepped closer to Lucas putting her hand on his cheek.

"Thank you for helping today. My mom and I appreciate it."

"Glad to be of service," Lucas smiled widely.

"You are such a dork," She laughed, stroking his cheek.

"Yeah, but I'm your dork," Lucas grabbed her waist and connected his lips with hers. It always amazed Lucas how soft her lips were. Even in the winter, they were never chapped.
