*modern day

It was the end of September, and Indiana had weird weather. Typically, it starts to cool off and transitions to the fall weather, but not this week. Hawkins was in a heat wave. Everyone had their shorts on still.

The worst part about this was the high school didn't have air conditioning. There were only huge fans that didn't work. The only thing the fans did was mix the musty kid's body odor into the room. Max couldn't handle the stench of the boy next to her, so she asked to go to the bathroom.

Fresh air hit her nose as she could finally breathe again. Max whipped out her phone once she closed the stall door behind her. The whole building was hot and sticky.

Lucas was having a hard time concentrating in his math class. It was too hot for his brain to function. Luckily for him, they were using textbooks today. He slipped his phone between the pages. As soon as he turned his phone on, a text came through. It was from Max.

"I want to leave."

A slight smile grew on his face. His girlfriend hated school, especially in the heat. Lucas practically dragged her to each day this week. The three bubbles popped up, indicating her typing another text to him.

"Tommy doesn't know what deodorant is"

"My nose is burning."

Lucas tried his best not to chuckle at her text. He felt bad. She sat next to the smelliest kid in school for two classes in a row.

"We've only been here for 30 minutes. We can't leave." He texted back.

"Why not? There is nothing important happening today." She shot back.

"True..."

"Does that mean you'll ditch with me?" Max was filling up with hope.

"I've never ditched in my life."

"We could leave after the first period." She suggested determined to get her boyfriend to skip one day of school.

Lucas sighed, looking up at the board. He couldn't take six more classes in this heat.

"I'm in. Meet up at your locker after this class." He replied.

Max's eyes widened at the text she had just received. No way did Lucas Sinclair say he would ditch school. She went back into class with a wide grin on her face.

30 long, painful minutes later, their first class was over. Max practically sprinted to her locker, and when she got there, he was already waiting for her.

She placed a few books into her locker before Lucas grabbed her hand. They both walked briskly to the nearest exit. Luckily for them, they had an open campus. This meant that if they didn't have a class, they were allowed to leave the school grounds. No one questioned them leaving because of this.

"Where are we going, Stalker?" Max smiled as she hopped into the passenger seat of his car.

"It's a surprise," Lucas teased. He knew exactly where to take her.

"Tell me!"

"It's like a five-minute drive. You'll see soon." Max playfully rolled her eyes at him.

The windows were down with the radio blaring. Max's hair was flying everywhere, but she didn't mind. The two teenagers were consumed by the smiles on their faces.

Lucas pulled into a park. There were walking paths that headed into the trees in front of them.

"I discovered this the other day, come on," Lucas opened the door for her, and she jumped out.

He led her through the trees making his own path and ignoring the signs that said to stay on the designated ones.

"I feel like I'm about to be murdered in the woods right now," Max laughed out. Where the hell was he taking her?

Lucas just laughed at her remark and moved the tree branches out of their view. There was a calm river flowing next to luscious green grass.

"Holy shit. This is gorgeous," Max exhaled, looking around in awe.

"Right?" Lucas was feeling pretty proud of himself. "The water's not too cold..."

Max returned the smile he presented on his face. They both kicked off their shoes and removed their socks. Both of them stripped down to their underwear and ran into the river.

"Not too cold, my ass!" Max splashed the icy water at him.

"You're going down." Lucas grabbed her waist and plunged them both into the freezing water.

The initial shock of the water wore off as soon as they broke the surface.

"DICKHEAD!" She yelled at him.

"Oh, come on, now you're used to it," Lucas reasoned.

"I hate you," Max said with a small grin on her face. "If this bra is ruined, it's your fault."

"Damnit, one less bra for you to wear," He raised his eyebrows. "And I mean, I'm not stopping you from taking it off," Lucas shrugged his shoulders.

A splash of water collided with his face.

"I am not about to take my bra off in public, dipshit." Max rolled her eyes at him trying to hide her slight blush.

"It was worth a shot."

"You know you are such a nerd," She laughed at him.

"You have been spending way too much time with Erica." Lucas referred to her calling him a nerd.

"What can I say? She adores me."

"I'm pretty sure all the Sinclairs adore you," He said, connecting his hands with her waist.

"Oh, is that right?" Max smiled, wrapping her hands around his neck.

"Mmhmm, I think one of them has been wanting to kiss you all day."

"Well then, he better make a move quick because I'm getting a little impatient." Her voice became softer, almost like a whisper but not as quiet.

The goosebumps on her skin became even more apparent when their lips connected. His grip on her waist tightened as he pulled her a little closer. Max grasped his shoulder for stability and deepened the kiss.

Something rustling in the leaves behind them pulled the couple apart. A deer peaked its head out of the trees, and the teenagers sighed with relief.

"Wanna go get food and then head back to my place?" Max smirked. "My mom won't be back till late."

"How could I say no to that?" Lucas chuckled.
