For mvlttipovs - I hope you like it! Part two coming very soon <3
This had been a long time coming, you thought as you walked into Higgs school. Your parents knew and wanted to do what was best for you which meant sending you to Truhams. As much as you loved that they were supportive, this was still scary. Very scary.
"So, Miss- I mean-"
"It's okay" You quickly reassured the headmaster. You had to stop doing that, brushing it off when people called you the wrong name or title.
"You're off to Truham's then" He looked down his nose at you.You were sitting on the chair next to his desk, but he had chosen not to sit down. Probably to be inferior to you; to intimidate you.
"Yeah, I-" You begin to explain yourself but he cuts you off
"No, I quite understand"He didn't. You were pretty sure he didn't understand anything that wasn't linear and binary. If it wasn't black and white then it was hardly worth knowing; a strange lesson that had been drilled into you since you were young. Which is what made this so hard. Your life wasn't black and hate and it certainly wasn't linear.
His lips were though, straight as a fucking ruler.
"I just needed to meet with you to make sure that this is what you want"
"It is" You said dryly
"Very well"Without another word he signed your leaving form and pushed it across the desk to you.
"Good luck to you er-"
"James" You supplied
"Good luck, James" He said, emphasising your name as if it was hard for him to say. That was behind you now though and here you were, standing outside the gates of Truham school. The school you were meant to go to. As uneasy as you felt, there was still a feeling of relief, a feeling of 'this is real'. You took a deep breathe and went in.
At first everything was new and scary. Students gave you weird looks, but the teachers were generally accepting and just treated you like another new student.
There was one teacher in particular though, your art teacher; Mr Ajayi. He made you feel comfortable and you felt immediately comfortable with him because of the rainbow flag badge he wore on his cardigan.
"How are you settling in?" He asked you after lesson one day with a knowing smile.
"Okay" You stated, a little apprehensive. As much as you wanted to trust him straight away, you always had your guard up, not wanting to trust anyone too quickly.
"And how are the other kids treating you?" He continued, shuffling some finished art pieces around on his desk.He gave the impression that he wasn't really enveloped in the conversation, but there was something about his tone that made you believe he cared.
"Okay" You repeated, in the same tone
"I want you to know that you can come to me" My Ajayi told you, now crossing his arms and leaning his hip on his desk. Giving you his full attention.
"Okay" You repeated again and the teacher laughed
"I know someone that would get on well with you" He smirked. That got your attention. You wanted to ask who, but you didn't want to seem too eager.
"Charlie Spring" Mr Ajayi continued as if he read your mind
"Oh" You mumbled, "The boy in this class?"
"Yeah - he eats his lunch here usually. He'll probably be here in a minute" The teacher looked at his watch as if Charlie's arrival to his classroom was like clockwork.Your eyes shot to the doorway as the boy appeared; as Mr Ajayi has expected.
"Ah, Charlie!" He greeted the boy with enthusiasm
"I was just saying, you and James here would get on well" He nodded to you and you gave an awkward smile, "Maybe you could be his mentor?" He suggested and your stomach did a flip with nervousness. Not because you didn't want Charlie to be your mentor, but because you didn't think he'd want to be.What you didn't know though was that Charlie was waiting for an excuse to talk to you. There was something that drew him to you and he couldn't put his finger on it. But he did want to speak to you and finally his excuse had come.
"Okay" Charlie said in the same tone you adopted to talk to Mr Ajayi just moments earlier and it made you smile.
You watched as Charlie stopped into the classroom and made his way over to the table you were stood at.
"I'm Charlie" He said bravely. His heart was beating out of his chest at talking to someone new but you didn't know that.
"I'm James"And that's how your friendship started. Now, you had been at Truham for almost a year and had been friends with Charlie for 8 months. Not that you liked to admit that you knew that to anyone. You didn't want them thinking that you'd actually counted the days or anything.
You found yourself round Charlie's house which apparently was a rarity for all the rest of his friends.
"I don't invite anyone round here, you should be honoured" He'd joked.
Charlie had disappeared to the bathroom and you were sat on his bed, waiting for him to come back. This was the day, you said to yourself. Charlie ought to know, he's my best friend.
"I'm back!" Charlie said cheerily, bounding over to the bed, "What were you saying about Waugh?"
You both had an interest in Greek literature; something you'd discovered a few months into your friendship. Although you were both kind of shy about it in the beginning.
"I- erm" You struggled, "I have something to tell you"
Charlie immediately felt the shift in mood and sat himself comfortably, cross legged on his bed; looking at you intently.
"Yeah?" He encouraged, his eyes were a mixture of worry and curiosity.
"I'm trans"The words spilled out surprisingly easily considering you hadn't come out to anyone at Truham before. Of course, you had friends at Higgs that knew, but this was different.
Although you didn't know it yet, something changed then and not the worst. Charlie felt a wash of relief and comfort wash over him.
"Oh" Charlie hesitated and in that moment you thought he'd kick you out of him house, telling you to never come back, "Okay - cool" He continued and you breathed a sigh of relief
"You're okay with it?" You asked, a look of disbelief plastered over your face
"Your still James, right?"
"Right" You repeated
"So you're still my best friend who's weirdly obsessed with Greek literature?"
"Yes" You laughed now, more out of relief than anything.
"So why would I care?"
Your eyes fill with tears unexpectedly. You really didn't think you'd react like this, but here you were crying on Charlie's bed.
"Hey! It's okay" Charlie immediately reached over to envelope you in a hug
"Sorry, I didn't think-"
"It's okay - thank you for telling me" Charlie reassured you and you felt your chest fill with love, "Have you told anyone else?" Charlie continued
You couldn't speak so you just shook your head into Charlie jumper instead.Charlie didn't say anything either and just let you cry in relief. It wasn't that you were sad or overly happy. You just felt relieved that you'd told him and that he accepted you and, most of all, still thought of you as James. The boy he'd befriended all those months ago in art class.
So that was that and as the months went on you guys became even closer. As if Charlie knowing that secret about you only made you relate to each other more.
Two updates in one day.. I must be making up for lost time!! ;) Part 2 coming very soon!!
