Stepping back into the kitchen, Nick saw the other girl had arrived, she was wearing short navy blue shorts and an off white t-shirt tucked in. Her hair was longer than Josie's but she wore it in a messy bun on top of her head.

"Hey, sorry - had a phone call" Nick mumbled and went to the fridge to get another bottle of beer before sitting down at the table again
"I was just saying that it was a good idea from Josie to all meet in the kitchen, we need to get to know everyone" The girl grinned, seeing that she had the attention of the two others in the room, "Sorry, I'm Abby - are you Kai or Nick?" She asked, looking at Nick
"Nick" He smiled
"Cool, nice to meet you Nick" She grinned again, "Let's get this party started"

Both Nick and Josie watched as Abby poured herself a Malibu and coke and then put the coke in the fridge.

"I guess we need to sort out who's bit of the fridge is who's" Abby said, gesturing to the randomly placed items
"Maybe we all get a shelf each?" Nick offered, "Or- I think there's three shelves, so one of us gets the door - I don't mind the door"
"Okay, if you don't mind" Abby shrugged and started taking out the rest of Nick's bottles and putting them in the door, "Although if you're an alcoholic you might need more room" She said, putting one of the bottles on the table as it didn't fit
"Oh, yeah, no - not an alcoholic" Nick stumbled slightly on his words and he realised it sounded like he actually was one and was a bad liar. So he stayed quiet for a bit at the table while the two girls got talking.

They both seemed nice enough, Nick thought. Abby was a bit overly confident but that could be nerves. He thought he'd get on with Josie the best, she seemed nice. A little while later, the kitchen door opens again to reveal who must be Kai. He was slightly shorter than Nick, but was quite good looking. He had short brown hair that he didn't seem to have styled and blue eyes with a strong jawline. Puberty had obviously treated him well, Nick thought.

"Oh hi, you must be Kai!" Abby called from across the kitchen a little too enthusiastically, the Malibu had clearly hit her already. Nick noticed that Josie seemed to straighten up a bit and shoot a big smile Kai's way.

"And you are?" Kai smirked, his eyes still on Abby
"Abby, this is Josie and that's Nick"

Nick looked up and pulled his lips into a tight smile, "Hi" He continued to watch Kai as he walked further into the kitchen and set a box of Thatchers on the table.

"Oh, I love Thatchers!" Abby said, her voice was weirdly higher than it was before Kai came into the room and she had taken her hair out of it's bun and was now putting it in a ponytail.

Kai just smiled at her and looked down to give Nick a look that said 'why is she acting weird?' Nick couldn't help but scoff and took another mouthful of beer. It seemed this would be a very interesting evening.

"So what are you all studying?" Kai asked, pulling a chair out to also sit at the table opposite Nick. He opened his box of Thatchers and kept them next to him as if he was intending to just sit there and work through them.

"I'm doing Criminal Psychology" Abby piped up first of course, turning so her back was leaning on the counter and she was fully facing Kai, "I just think it'll be so interesting and it'd be so cool to get a job working with psychos"
Nick raised his eyebrows at that, but said nothing.

"Doing what? Like being their therapist?" Kai asked, leaning back in his chair which made his hair fall in front of his face slightly, but he pushed it away. He was wearing a black hoodie and jeans. So simple, but it seemed to be working wonders on Abby who was now also taking a seat at the table next to Nick so she was opposite Kai.

"Yeah or like a psychiatrist who has to tell the police what's wrong with the criminal and convince them that it's not the defendant's fault, it's how their brain works"
"I don't think-" Josie started, but Abby butted in
"No, there are jobs like that. I just think it'd be really interesting" She shrugged and leaned back in her chair too to copy Kai who just smiled at her and looked at Nick
"What about you? You haven't said much" He raised his eyebrows and Nick watched him as Kai traced his whole face with his eyes. It was like he was trying to sus him out.

Nick looked back down at his beer bottle, "I'm doing sports science, I thought about doing Psychology too but I like rugby and wanted something that meant I could carry on playing"
"You could have done Psychology and played rugby" Josie piped up, now taking the last seat next to Kai, "There's loads of opportunities to do extra curricular stuff. It's one of the reasons I wanted to go here"
"What are you studying?" Nick asked
"English Literature, I want to be a teacher"
"Cool, my parents are teachers" Kai smiled, "But I guess seeing them do it put me off - not that it's bad" He quickly added, seeing Josie's face drop slightly, "Just not for me, I'm doing Mechatronics"
"Which is?" Abby prompted, she now had her ponytail on one shoulder and was swirling the end of it with her finger
"So it's mechanics, electronics and computing - basically means I can build robots which I thought would be pretty cool"
"You must have to be so smart to get into that" Abby smirked and took a mouthful of her drink
"It's gonna be full on" Kai laughed, also taking a swig of his cider.

The rest of evening carried on quite nicely. The conversation flowed and it was nice to get to know everyone. Nick felt a lot better having met everyone properly. The people he was sharing a flat with weren't complete strangers now. Even if he was hundreds of miles away from the people he loved the most.

At one point, Abby and Josie left the kitchen to go to the toilet together. Apparently that's something girls do when they're drunk. Once Nick is alone in the kitchen with Kai, Kai leant over the table. He was almost touching Nick's arm as he says, "So you have a boyfriend then?"

It had come up again in conversation and, being a bit tipsy, Nick was telling them all about Charlie and how they'd met and how it sucked that they were so far away.

"Yeah" Nick smiled, thinking of Charlie and leant back in his chair to move away from Kai
"Must be nice to be, like, out"
Nick furrowed his eyebrows, he knew were this was going, "I mean yeah, it took time though"
Kai scoffed, "So you're gay?"
"Bi, actually" Nick crossed his arms
"And your boyfriend's okay with that?" Kai smirked, but it wasn't a nice smirk
"Yeah, why wouldn't he be" Nick held his ground. He leant over and put his still crossed arms on the table, "We're happy - I actually don't know what I would do with him" He tried not to but he smiled, breaking the tough demeanour he was trying to have, so he changed tact, "So you're into boys then?" It was Nick's turn to smirk and it made Kai lean back in his chair
"I guess" He shrugged, trying to act as if it wasn't a big deal, "Can't tell anyone though"
"So you're jealous of me?" Nick supplied easily, smiling slightly.
Kai scoffed again
"It will be okay, y'know" Nick said, taking his bottle of beer. It was his sixth and he was enjoying it. Enjoying what the drink did to him. He was confident. Sure of himself and someone like Kai, who reminded him of Harry back home, wasn't going to crush his spirit.

Kai stayed silent, watching Nick take a mouthful of beer so once he was finished, Nick continued, "I know it might not seem like it now, but it'll be fine - I won't tell the girls" He added and saw Kai lighten up a bit at that, "How many people have you told?"
"Just you" Kai confessed, leaning back on the table and taking his cider can, "I couldn't tell anyone back home, but here-" He paused and looked down at the can as he turned it with his fingers, "I guess I can be who I want"

Nick smiled, "Yeah, you can"

Before either of them could say anymore, the girls were back. Giggling to each other.
