Marc walks back over to the wall and pulls a box from the crack. He strolls back to me, shoulders hunched, face saddened.
"They stole all the heads."
I look inside the box. It is full of headless dolls. Who on earth would do such a terrible thing?
He reads my mind. "The same person who stole our mother from us."
"Our mother? What mother? My mother's dead and gone."
"She's not dead."
"What are you talking about? I was at her funeral. She's buried in Leer Island cemetery."
He stares at me in silence then understands. "No, Mary. Ebony's not your real mother."
"Come now, Marc. Is this a joke? Everyone knows I'm the daughter of a famed daughter."
"Our mother is no one's daughter."
"Our mother? Now I know this is a joke. I'm an only child."
"Once you learn the pure language, everything will be clear."
"What's that?"
"You're speaking it now. Or at least just a little. But you'll learn. Give it time."
"Thoughts?"
"Not just thoughts. United thoughts."
He walks back over to the wall again and pushes one of the pieces back in. Everything seals up like new, except for a dark line. Then a scene gets replayed before our eyes. Hordes of people become confused and stop building a tower. I immediately recognize the story.
"I thought the different languages were what we speak today."
"You mean the ones technology can translate? Then why is the tower still incomplete?"
I have no real answer.
"And then why are some things still impossible for us?"
"So all we have to do is read each other's minds?"
"Not quite, Mary. We all have to think a certain way. Free our minds from mental slavery."
"I'm no one's slave!"
"Then why do you cry yourself to sleep? And why did you take those pills?"
"That's none of your damn business."
"It is if you're the one who's going to be leading us."
"Lead you? Lead you where? Look, I'm no one's leader either."
He responds by pointing ahead. "There's the first door. It's time for you to unlock it."
