The blast pushes both the stick and wind out of me at the same time. They bow, one after the other, and leave to meet their intruder friend. I take one last look around before I say goodbye to the Bunny House. There are so many memories here; so much incompleteness. Daniel Sotina may never forgive me for not finishing his novel. And I will never forgive myself for not creeping into every crevice of Mrs. Carter's mind, in No Name Yet. Every book remains unfinished each time someone puts it down, all songs unheard once the audience is asleep. This is why we have companions, to present the whole picture. Left and right hands applaud accomplishments. Dancers cause drummers to salute. Seeds must sink into fertile ground. And here I am a female force without its male companion.
My new friend is a serpent who promises to stay with me until the end of my journey, help me merge my two selves. And who better than the serpent to guide me when its three faces reflect my bedroom mirror, all of them paying homage to worlds without end.
"How did you get the image to come out and play?" I ask.
"It likes carrots," it replies. "I dangled one."
"What?"
And I fall down laughing. It is the silliest answer I ever heard to anyone's question.
"Are you ready for your last hurrah?"
"Yes," I say simply, and we're back on to the long road in search of another lane.
