Later that night, I light the last three candles – red, white and black, the colours Lily always loved wearing – and pull my diary out for my pen to paint what's left of my emotions.

Dear Lily,

Nothing can make the pain go away. Not being bumped up from the ground floor to your room. Not plastering these walls with shiny copper coins. Not wrapping myself in your tattered sheets at night. Absolutely nothing can cleanse my eyes from seeing this room bathed in your blood.

Were you trying to tell me something? I stay up some nights hoping you'd come and explain. Other nights I force myself to sleep so I can avoid your truth. But I've got time now. Help me understand why you blew your brain away. Like me, did you feel unloved? Did you feel misunderstood because you looked different? Or did you somehow feel out of place and decided to go out with a bang?

I miss you, Lily. You were the friend and mother I never had. And if your cry for help was an invitation to kill my past and follow you beyond the darkest corridors, I am ready to accept. Just come to me on this my final night. Let me curl up in your arms and awaken in a new world, a world safe from Ebony's disappointments. Hold my hand and lead me across.

Forever your friend,

Mary.
