Pete is standing in the middle of the lane when we enter, staring into the vast nothingness. The serpent becomes a staff in my hand to throw him off. Although, I doubt he would've noticed anyway. I turn around to see what has him so captivated. It's an album in the sky, flicking its own pages. They're of pictures we never took, the moments we simply existed in each other's presence. And there are captions that tell a different story than the one we lived. I am being escorted inside of Pete's mind, the Pete who is afraid to die in a strange land, the one wishing he could make me Mary Falona instead of her. I was right all along. My intuition was in step with the truth after all. But now it's too late. He's there with her, and I'm lying here waiting. So I too stand in the middle of the lane and stare into space.

"Sa...Ta...Na...Ma...Sa...Ta...Na...Ma...Sa...Ta...Na...Ma," the serpent whispers in my ear.

My lips dare not move at this stage. But I join the serpent in song like they taught me to, with my mind. Then the tears flow uncontrollably. I can't take much more of this. How long again until I rush off this bed and on to the one that keeps calling my name? I open my eyes. The timer above me says I have forty-seven minutes to go.
