"Good morning, ma'am."
"Miss Kim," you mumbled, offering a halfhearted nod. You were already thumbing through the stack of papers that she – Kim Yoohyeon, that was, your assistant – had handed you upon arrival at the office. "This isn't complete. I'm going to need the contact information, too."
"It's – it's right here," Yoohyeon quickly shuffled through what she was holding. Gingerly, you took the iced coffee you'd ordered from her and sipped on it as she scrambled to find the extra papers. Ugh, too sweet.
"Here you go, ma'am."
You skimmed over the leaflet, grunting in approval. "Schedule an appointment with Kim Bora for two o'clock today. If she can't make it, then tell her that we must meet for dinner. No exceptions. Do not let her off the phone without something today!"
"Yes, ma'am."
"And—" you jerked a thumb to your office— "I better see somebody at that desk when I walk in."
Yoohyeon beamed. "Oh, you will, ma'am. I interviewed many candidates, and she was the best of th—"
"Then I should expect you wouldn't let me walk in there without knowing who I'm looking for, wouldn't you?"
"Her information is right here, ma'am," Yoohyeon replied with a grin. She presented the paper with both hands, which you didn't take but leaned over to skim. Han Dong was the new secretary's name, though a handwritten note stated that she preferred the inclusion of her family name when her given one was used. Her qualifications and experience were extensive. Very good. Yoohyeon got a nod of approval for that.
"The call with Kim Bora's office, please," you called over your shoulder.
"Right away, ma'am!"
"Hello, ma'am."
Handong had stood to greet you properly, as you'd expected. Normally, you'd mentally mark that as a point in the right column. But normally, new employees didn't look like she did.
You stood still in the entryway, sizing her up.
She was tall, and her slender figure only made her seem more so. Her skin was fair, which was emphasized by her dark features and hair, which you realized after a moment was not black but very subtly blue. There was a captivating aura about her, as though she believed herself above everyone else for good reason.
"Good morning," you finally answered. You took a shaky step forward, then another, feeling your heels wobble under you. You cleared your throat and breezed past Handong to your office, dropping a suede case on her desk as you did so. "I hope you're ready to work. I need the latest digital edition of Dreamcatcher magazine paid for and downloaded to my tablet. Bring it in when you're done." Mainly because I want to see your legs, you finished internally.
"Yes, ma'am."
You tossed your bag onto your desk and took a seat behind it, scanning your computer. A notification in the bottom right-hand corner told you that Yoohyeon had just secured the afternoon appointment. As you waited for Handong to come in, you reviewed the print version of the magazine and began scribbling notes in the margins.
Tap, tap.
You looked up to observe the secretary as she let herself in, leaning back in your chair. "The magazine?"
