Lee Siyeon always told you that it was her fate to serve in the military. From the moment that she first said so, you had been preparing yourself for the inevitable day that she would leave your arms to do what she felt was meant for her.
Over time, you had thought about what it would be like without her. You had spent a large chunk of your young lives together and had grown attached at the hip in doing so, and it was hard to picture waking up without her angelic face to turn to and taking showers without her loving hands massaging shampoo into your scalp, but you did it. You imagined it all, for better or for worse.
So, when Siyeon finally gave you one last kiss goodbye, you felt okay.
You got through it. Being without her was tough, but you knew that what she was doing was tougher.
Only when Siyeon left, however, did you begin thinking about her coming back to you, being in your arms again, being home. Then that became all that you thought about for eight long weeks. You never knew that two months could seem to drag on so long.
But the day had finally arrived – Siyeon's graduation from basic training. The day that she would hold you again.
You picked a blue dress – her favorite color, not to mention a patriotic one – for the occasion, although you knew that it wouldn't be on you for long once you got home.
It was a hot day, and you were glad that you had brought plenty of water along with Siyeon's favorite snacks. You knew that she had gone through much harder things at training, but you couldn't help feeling bad for your wife standing out there in the relentless sun whilst you sat in a shaded area, watching the events of the day.
When you finally caught a glimpse of her, it took everything in you not to jump into her arms then and there.
She looked so handsome, more so than you remembered. Her hair was slicked back into a low chignon that didn't look much different from the one that she sported on your wedding, but her uniform looked quite the contrast from the white lace dress that she had worn.
Once Siyeon was in your sight, you tried your hardest not to let her out of it again. Although you were pretty far away, you could make her out most of the time.
Waiting for the announcement that you could tap Siyeon out was torture. Your once-perfect red nails were all but chewed off when it finally rolled around. But that was the last thing on your mind as you raced down the stairs two at a time, sprinting faster than you ever had in your life once you got onto the concrete area where she was waiting for you.
Then you stopped, practically skidding to a halt just before her. Siyeon looked straight ahead as she had been instructed to, but you could see tears welling in her big brown eyes, her chin wobbling as she watched you blankly.
You pressed your hands together before your lips, your shoulders shaking helplessly. Somehow, you got the words that you had been meaning to say out, although they were so tear-filled that you weren't sure if she could understand them. "I'm so proud of you."
Then you dove into her arms, and she caught you just as you knew she would. Siyeon's hands wrapped around your thighs, cradling you more tightly than ever before. You were surprised when she didn't speak until you realized that she was sobbing in complete silence. It was noisy around you, but all you could focus on was her.
Her grasp held you so tightly to her body that you had no chance to move, but you didn't really want to. You just trusted that you were bringing her comfort as she buried her face in your neck.
Your fingers massaged Siyeon's back slowly, drawing soothing circles the way that she always did to remind you of her presence. Little by little, you were beginning to recognize other things happening around you, like the fact that the woman next to you was also being tapped out by her family.
"Siyeon! Lee Siyeon is crying?!" you heard her exclaim, and you smiled against Siyeon's shoulder. She hadn't let up on her grasp one bit, but you weren't complaining. "Whoa, the woman made of stone cries!"
"No way," another voice laughed. You couldn't see who it belonged to, but you assumed that it was another graduate. It was high and almost too delicate for you to picture in uniform, but its words told you otherwise. "Never thought I'd see that in a million years."
It seemed that their words were shaking Siyeon out of some of her emotions. She finally loosened her grip enough so that your feet touched the ground again, only to grab your face instead, pulling it closer to hers. You didn't care that her lips were salty with tears that had fallen onto them. You just wanted to feel her perfect pout against yours again.
But before you could do that, Siyeon had something to tell you, too. "I love you. So much," she whispered shakily. Then her lips were on yours, for longer a time than you could ever remember. She leaned over you so that your chest pressed into yours, your hair tumbling over your shoulders and down your back.
You wanted to kiss her forever. No amount of time seemed like it could make up for what you had spent apart without seeing or talking to each other.
But that wasn't possible – at least, not with the commentary around you. "Oh, it's Siyeon's girl!"
"God, I heard about that woman every damn free minute we had."
"What free minutes?" another voice grumbled.
"Her wifey, it's her little wifey."
Finally, Siyeon released your lips, but she kept her arms encircled around your waist, tucking her head back into the crook of your neck. In this embrace, you were able to look around and see who had been speaking.
Three other women about Siyeon's age were watching you. Given that their loved ones around them looked a little antsy, you quickly gathered that they were just waiting to tease your wife before they left.
A little eager to see that, you responded to their comments. "You can't possibly be talking about my crybaby. She's so emotional at home!"
"Ugh..." you heard a small voice mutter in your left ear, but you weren't about to stop. The women in uniform looked shocked.
"What? No way. We called her 'the robot' because she didn't have any emotions. She just stared into space all the time."
"Bora!" Siyeon groaned. "Shut up."
Her voice was muffled, but it could still be heard clearly enough to elicit laughter.
"Well, ma'am," the woman with the deepest voice spoke, addressing you. "We heard all about how pretty and wonderful you are—"
"—And how good your homemade chocolate chip cookies are—" the tallest one interjected.
"—Every single day. That woman loves you a lot," Bora finished.
You just chuckled, looking back at Siyeon, who sniffled. "Fine, Yubin and Yoohyeon are right," she said sheepishly. "But Bora isn't. I didn't talk about you every day. We didn't have time for that."
"And here I thought that you would return all tough," you teased, rolling your eyes. "I might have to send you back."
"No!" Siyeon laughed, sweeping you back into her arms. She leaned over you again, dipping you low as she kissed you once more. This time, as she did so, you noticed her steady heartbeat, making you smile against her lips.
You heard teasing coos from Yubin, Yoohyeon, and Bora at that, but you couldn't focus on them, even if you wanted to. You simply pulled apart just from your wife to look into her chocolate eyes, your own brimming with tears and your heart just as full as you spoke. "For you to be a solider was fate, but for you to be in my arms is destiny."
