"I know you're seeing someone. Would you just tell me who it is?" Sarah tried to keep the upset tone from her voice as she spoke to the guy she was in love with.
She knew [name] was seeing someone, she just didn't know who he was seeing. She was trying to act like it didn't bother her. That she was just his curious best friend.
"Okay, okay. I'll tell you." He rubbed the back of his neck. "I'm dating Rafe."
"Wait." Sarah shook her head, feeling her heart break. "You're dating my brother?"
"Uh, yeah. Is that okay? It's not weird or anything is it?"
She wanted to say it was weird and that she hated it, that they needed to break up because he should be with her.
But that's not what she said.
"No. It's not weird at all." She just wanted him to be happy.
"Really?" He whole face lit up with relief and excitement. "That's awesome! He's been whining about wanting to go public and now I can give him the good news."
"How did it, um, start?" She didn't even know if she wanted to know the answer but found herself asking anyway.
"One night when I came over here to watch a movie with you." [name] was more then happy to tell the story of how he got with the guy he now has really strong feelings for. "I left the room to get the popcorn and he was in the kitchen. We got to talking and then exchanged numbers and it just went from there." He shrugged.
So if she had gotten the popcorn that night none of this would have happened. He would still be hers.
"He asked me out but I wanted to keep it on the down low until I was ready to tell you. I didn't know how'd you react and I know the best friend dating the sibling can be weird sometimes."
Her face couldn't keep up the positive expression and the more he talked, the more her frown deepened and she stared at the floor.
[name] noticed and walked over, putting his hand under her chin and lifting her head. She stared into his eyes and he stared back but not with the same love she held. "Are you sure you're okay with this?"
"If I wasn't, what would you do?" She blurted out and she saw the happiness drain from his eyes. She hated it.
"I don't know." His hand left her chin and he bit his lip. "I think - I think I'm in love with him, Sarah. If you didn't approve." He gulped. "I'd have to deal with it."
"But who would you choose?"
"You're making me choose?" His face now turned horrified.
"No!" She quickly exclaimed. "No, like it said, it's fine."
He breathed a sigh of relief. "Good, then I don't have to answer that question. I really didn't want to."
But she wanted to know the answer. Who would he choose? It had to be her, right?
