Chapter 44: Goodbye My Lover, Tokyo Ghoul
Word Count: 1306It had been months since [name] last saw his lover, Kaneki. The man had disappeared into thin air and ever since then [name] had been doing everything he could to find him. He was afraid Kaneki was hurt or kidnapped. He wouldn't just up and disappear for no reason. It just wasn't possible.
He pulled up outside of the cafe Kaneki used to work at. The was another stop on his list after visiting Hide and the school Kaneki used to go to. He pulled his bag out from the back seat and put it over his shoulder as he exited the car. His shaggy brown hair dropped into his eyes and he huffed in annoyance, running his fingers through it to try and maintain it. All the worry about Kaneki had made any trips to the hair dresser less important.
He walked into the small cafe, the bell singing from above his head, alerting everyone of his presence. He smiled softly as he approached the first waitress he saw. "Um, hi. I'm looking for someone. His name is Kaneki. He used to work here."
Touka raised her eyebrows in surprise. "He hasn't been to work in a few months. Sorry. Who are you?"
"He didn't mention me?" He questioned back feeling a little hurt at the revelation. When she shook her head he answered, "in his boyfriend." Touka looked even more surprised. "Would you have any idea where he might be?" He asked hopefully.
That hope deflated when she shook her head once again. "I'm sorry. No."
He frowned, looking down at his hands sadly. "That's okay. If you hear from him can you give me a call?" He got a pen from his coat pocket and wrote down his number of a napkin. "Just so I know he's alright."
"Yeah. Of course." She mumbled.
He walked back out the door. Another place off the list he could cross off. Another dead end. "Where are you, Kaneki?" He mumbled to himself. He made his way back over to his car, getting out his keys and going to put them into the door when suddenly he was struck from behind, a blunt force sending him straight to the ground. He groaned in pain, lifting his hand to try and touch his head.
Another male leaned down, getting in his face with a sneer. "Heard you were looking for Kaneki. We can't have too many humans snooping around." And with that he lifted his hand and punched [name] in the face, sending him into a darkness.

The next time he woke up, his arms and legs were tied down to an uncomfortable chair. He slowly lifted his aching head, his mouth feeling dry and his eyes seeing a big blur. "H - Hello!" He called out scared. "What do you want from me?!" As he regained more of his consciousness, he struggled against the restraints more. It hurt but he knew he needed to do whatever he could to get out of the situation he was in.
The sound of a door scraping against the ground made his freeze. He widened his eyes as he saw a shadow of a figure walk over to him. "Who are you? Please don't hurt me." He begged, feeling the restraints dig into his skin.
"Why didn't you stop looking for me?" The voice was soft and one he instantly recognised.
"Kaneki..." He breathed out, the fear in him diminishing quickly. "You're here. What's going on? Get me out of here!"
Kaneki stepped into the light, his appearance completely different from when [name] last saw him. His head was no white and there was no emotions of his bloodied face. "You have to be quiet. I'm going to get you out of here. I promise. I won't let them hurt you."
"Who are they? Why are you with them?" He asked quietly as Kaneki began to loosen the ropes around his wrists, not answering his question. "I'm freaking out here. Will you tell me what's going on? Please."
Kaneki halted in his movements, eyes finally showing a bit of emotion. Sadness. "You've put yourself in such a dangerous situation. All I can tell you is you need to go home and stop looking for me. For all you know I'm gone and I'm not coming back. You need to move on."
He shook his head quickly. "What? No. I'm not just going to leave when I've finally found you." The ropes around his wrists were undid and he could now see his red raw skin with tiny specks of blood. Kaneki's eyes drew down to the sweet smelling blood and he gulped, turning his head away.
"Kaneki..." He put his hand on his lovers cheek and slowly turned his head. "Open your eyes. Look at me." He said softly. Kaneki opened his eyes, showing his true self. One of his eyes being that of the Ghoul. [name] gasped in shock and withdrew his hand as if he had been shocked. "You're a Ghoul." He whispered in disbelief.
"That's right and that's why you need to leave. Ghouls are what kidnapped you and if you keep asking questions about me, they'll do it again." Kaneki ignored the pain in his heart at how [name] pulled away from him and stood up. "You need to leave now before one of them gets hungry and comes back."
[name]'s legs were shaky as he stood himself up, his head spinning with fear and confusion. Kaneki didn't give him much time to recover before he was forcing him to follow him out of the warehouse. "Now you know that I'm a monster I should be easy to forget about."
"Don't speak like that!" [name] said, making them both stop once they were outside of the warehouse, a car awaiting. "I was shocked at first but I don't care that you're a Ghoul! It doesn't change the way I feel about you. Nothing will. Please just come home. We can work through this. I know we can."
Kaneki smiled. The first genuine one he had done in months. He never thought [name] accepting him would feel this good but even with the acceptance he couldn't leave. It was to dangerous. "I will always love you, [name] but this is where we part. Our worlds are different now. You need a human who can give you a normal life. Not me."
"You don't know what you're talking about." [name] denied and grabbed onto Kaneki's hand. "Ghoul or not you're still the same person and I want you. Only you."
Kaneki sighed sadly and leaned forward, placing a gentle kiss on [name]'s soft cheek. "Goodbye. And don't come looking for me again." He took the car keys out of his pocket and put them in the other males hand. "The only thing that will make me happy is if you go home and live your life."
The cold keys felt heavy in his hands. "I don't want to leave you."
"I know. I don't want you to leave but I won't let anything happen to you. To keep you safe I have to let you go." Kaneki whipped his head behind him as he heard a crash from the warehouse. "You need to leave now!"
[name] had to fight every instinct in his body as he got into the car. "Goodbye, Kaneki." Even if he had to live a normal life, he would never forget about his first love and he could only hope that they would meet again in the future.
