It was night time and Troy and his dad were throwing the basketball around in the court in their backyard.

"I need to talk to you about something." Jack said to his son, his eyes serious.

Troy furrowed his eyebrows and bounced the basketball up and down. "What's up, dad?"

"That new guy you've been seeing. [name]? I don't think he's a good influence on you and I don't think it's a good idea for you too see each other anymore."

Troy had not been expecting that. "What?"

Jack sighed and pinched the bridge of his nose. "I know about him, he's always skipping school and he has no goals for his life. I don't want him dragging you down with him. You're destined for great things, Troy and being with him is only going to ruin that."

"You don't know anything about him." Troy protested. "You might think you do but you don't. He means everything to me and he would do anything for me."

"I'm not trying to be the bad guy here." Jack held up his hands in defence. "I'm only looking out for you. You think you love him now but I promise you will find someone else. Someone who actually deserves you - "

"He deserves me!" Troy cut him off. He knew how insecure [name] was in their relationship because he also didn't think he was good enough for Troy. Troy hated that he felt that way and he hated his dad was saying the same thing.

"Troy - "

"No." Troy cut him off again. "I know you think you're looking out for me but you aren't. I have never felt this way about anyone before. [name] treats me like I'm gold or something and if you actually tried to get to know him, you would see that." He sighed. "I'm not a little kid anymore. I can make my own decisions."

"I know." Jack sighed. "I'm sorry, I didn't mean to upset you."

"Just give him a chance, dad. For me. Please. Find out who he really is and then I promise you, you'll see why I love him."

Jack pursed his lips. "Fine but if he steps one foot out of line, he's gone." He crossed his arms stubbornly.

Troy rolled his eyes. He knew it wouldn't take long for his dad to see the truth because [name] was the kind of person that could make anyone like him.
