⚤꩜De Generation After Next

A couple of generations in the future. Population has plummeted as more and more people start getting into long distance relationships; or find other high tech hobbies more fun than sex. Whole neighbourhoods of empty homes, abandoned simply because there aren't people to fill them anymore.

And at the same time, people pin the blame for rising crime rates on kids growing up without a stable family life. A government think-tank comes up with the idea of sacrificing individual freedoms, in the name of creating stable family units. A couple of generations ago, the scheme would have been seen as barbaric. But now, people are willing to accept it as long as it works. Everyone is conditioned (by means unspecified) to care for their children. You have to provide a minimum of time and effort to looking after them; and raise them with an acceptable respect for the law.

But kids seeing their parents fight is still damaging to their young minds. So the conditioning goes further. As soon as you have children, you find yourself becoming more and more malleable, becoming who your partner wants you to be. Becoming submissive and obedient. Obviously this only applies to one partner, because doing it to both would be redundant and nobody would make the decisions. So it's based on whoever has the highest rank in a statutory Parenting Fitness Evaluation, an exam to show that you'd be a good parent. When you have kids, the better parent is in charge of all aspects of your life.

The story I originally thought of is based around a woman who gets pregnant after a drunken one night stand that she can't even remember. Along with all the usual hormonal changes, she finds herself becoming more submissive, starting to agree with everyone, because she doesn't know who the father is. Then finally he reveals himself, and invites her to join his harem. He's cheating the system, and getting away with it. Making a perfect family, with a dozen partners who all can't stop obeying him.
