This story follows the romantic misadventures of two flatmates, Amylise and Emanuelle. The two young women have known each other since meeting in high school, with a friendship that they describe as being like a buddy movie. They have very different personality types, and different appearance, but get on really well. One thing they do have in common is their enjoyment of trashy romance novels. Amylise got into them because she found love stories with plot twists and drama more interesting than the uninspired advances of boys her age; while Emanuelle sought them as solace at a time she was feeling low self-confidence and doubted she would ever find love herself.

One thing they did notice in all those books was that the heroines always made life harder for themselves, and quite often caused all their own problems by doing dumb things when blinded by their emotions. And so two girls decided that if they managed to fall in love, they were going to watch out for each other, and make sure that they weren't careless or stupid when love finally came knocking.

Years later, that promise is still a thing. And although they haven't really had many serious relationships, they both find it comforting to have someone they can trust to tell them if what they're doing isn't in their own best interests. They know it's easy to get carried away, and also that they can trust each other. But their different concepts of romance have evolved a little as they got more experienced. Amylise is asexual; she is interested in romantic relationships, but has realised that she has a very low sex drive and finds it disappointing if a potential partner is too concerned by it. Emanuelle, on the other hand, is aromantic. She is kinky and likes intense, passionate relationships, but her ideal relationship would be built on friendship, a great deal of trust, and good sex. She doesn't get anything out of the traditional romantic activities, and it's more likely to be lust that puts her in situations where Amylise needs to remind her not to do anything too risky.

At the start of the story, Amylise is just starting to explore a relationship with a new guy, while Emanuelle is currently single and is starting to worry again that it'll be hard for her to get her needs met. It's easy to find someone who wants her, but she tends to feel attraction for dangerous guys, and then tends to give them more trust than they deserve. It's been a long time since she had anything like a stable relationship, and is starting to feel like she's missing out.

Added to missing a promotion at work, Emanuelle is starting to be bothered by feelings of inadequacy again; telling herself that she'll never be good enough to do well at work or to find a boyfriend/girlfriend to share her life with. She started doing affirmations, telling herself that she deserves to have a good life, but it doesn't help much. And she's starting to have trouble sleeping. On the advice of a friend who also had an issue like that, she decides to try visiting a hypnotherapist. Someone who can put her to sleep. She isn't sure if she believes in that stuff, but decides to give it a try, and it turns out to work very well. After a month she finds it a lot easier to believe in herself, and is getting plenty of sleep. But she's not looking forward to the end of her sessions with Dr Onër.

She decides that she wants to keep on going back to the same doctor to help her with some other things. Maybe he can help her to stop procrastinating, for example, or to be more organised. Perhaps he can give her a trigger that she can use to get herself out of bed in the morning and take away the temptation to snooze a few more minutes. And so she signs up for a new course of treatment. And at the same time, she is more often fantasising about what the doctor might have done without her being aware of it. There's something about imagining that someone could take advantage of her without her even being aware of it.

Amylise worries about her friend. Of course she does. And extending the promise to keep her from doing careless things, she plants a bug on Emanuelle and listens in on a couple of the hypnosis sessions. She's surprised to find that it's entirely goal-focused, without the slightest hint of impropriety. She starts to worry even more, and tries to figure out what could be causing her friend to dream about being molested by the handsome hypnotist.

Eventually, after much sneaking around, they actually talk about it straight out, and manage to decode the cryptic clues from Emanuelle's subconscious. It's not the hypnotist's desires that are giving her weird dreams, but her own. As soon as she realised just how suggestible she is, her submissive streak latched onto the idea. The reason she keeps going back to improve different parts of her life is that it turns her on to imagine that she's helpless; it gives her the opportunity to make her fantasies feel a little more real, even if Dr Onër is way too professional to do any of those things.

Amylise finally pushes her friend to actually confess her desires. The doctor seemed to be entirely understanding of the concept of aromantic attraction; and has already proven that he's extremely trustworthy. And he could so easily have a lot of power over Emanuelle; confident and commanding. He really is her perfect guy, if only she'd let herself admit it. And once the two friends start being honest with each other about their feelings, it gives both of them the motivation to reach out and grab the things they really want.
