Jack is a little insecure. He's never done that well in school, and his dreams of a sporting career came crashing down when it turns out that his stamina and speed are well above average compared to everyone he knew in school, but not good enough for a pro career. He's got his parents helping to buy his first home, and sooner or later the inheritance will be enough to give him and Tanija a comfortable life, but nothing like the luxuries he dreamed of being able to provide her with.
This won't actually be a problem. Tanija also didn't have enough coordination to get on the cheerleading squad in school, but she was pretty smart and determined to learn more. She might not have been a genius, but she was doing well in college and had a decent shot at a well-paying research job. But that was even more of an issue in Jack's mind, because he couldn't stand to be one of those deadbeat losers living off his girlfriend. So he did the only thing he could think of: try to sabotage her career.
Jack finds some steroids online which are known to inhibit complex thought formation for some people. It's an unpleasant side effect, maybe, but he'd be there to provide for her and she'd probably be happier if she didn't need to think about everything. They say ignorance is bliss, after all. It was helping her really, releasing her from the society-imposed expectation of being as smart as a man, and letting her be cared for and happy instead. He could feel good about his choice, knowing that it was really what she needed.
He gets the drugs, and starts putting a small amount in Tanija's coffee every morning. Starting out with just a couple of grains, and building up to the amount recommended by his friend-of-a-friend dealer. It takes a long time for him to notice the effects, but eventually he can fine-tune it to find a happy balance. He doesn't want to hurt her, after all. He wants her to be able to look after herself, but without being smart enough to get bored with him, or become obsessed with trying to be the best in a world where all the old white guys shaped the rules to benefit only people like them.
One thing he never expected was how much it helps their private life. It seems like lowered intelligence lowered her inhibitions as well, and she didn't spend so much time overthinking everything when he asked her to try something new in the bedroom. She quickly came to understand that he was smarter, and trust him to make all the decisions. And he was sure that after that, it was great for both of them.
After a couple of months, Tanija starts taking more care of her looks as well. She realises that she could do some easy math and science, but the hard stuff was just too much for her. And that means she'll have to concentrate on being a pretty face, using the talents nature has given her. She gets her nails done regularly, cares more about makeup, and does everything she can to make her fiancé happy.
The new beauty routine takes her out of the house quite a lot, but it's good for her so Jack doesn't mind. And he likes the new friends she's bringing home, who seem to be just as interested in looking good. That's when Jack decides to push a little further with his plan, adding aphrodisiacs to his chemical cocktail, and maybe testing if he can give some of her friends a sample too. When they're not smart enough to see through his trickery, it becomes all too easy to organise a threesome whenever he's in the mood.
And then we shift perspective to see Tanija on the way to work. She gets her hair done quickly, and she's satisfied that Jack will be impressed. And then on to the office, her posture changing quite a bit as she puts on a serious coat over the too-revealing skirt and top. She discusses the night before with her friend Lisette, whose head is still feeling a little foggy; but she says it was a nice break from having to think so much. Then they're at work, and it's all business.
Turns out the intelligence-reducing drugs Jack bought work for maybe half of people to some degree, but nothing like the dealer would have had him believe. And the chemical is completely denatured by high temperatures, so putting it into coffee will never work. Tanija is too observant to miss a secret ingredient being added; and she certainly wondered why there was a new bag and a crumpled Material Safety Data Sheet in the medicine cabinet.
The drugs her boyfriend had found never worked. But she'd known he was feeling down after not landing in his dream career, so she decided to let him have what he wanted for a while. She'd studied hard enough in college to have a broad base of knowledge and quick wits, so it didn't take her too long to find a cocktail of synthetic chemicals that would do what he'd hoped for without having any long-term side effects. The first batch, in college, had been short lasting and needed a new dose every few hours, so outside the house she had been more than smart enough to ace her course. And when she found that it really was a lot of fun to avoid thinking in some circumstances, she'd put a lot of her focus into developing more sophisticated intelligence control drugs.
The current version was based on an ink developed for e-tattoos. Rather than changing colour in response to an extremely short range radio transmission, these drugs allowed her to fine-tune her reduced intellect, and return to normal instantly by using a radio pulse to deactivate the chemicals. Filing a patent for that process made her the most-wanted graduate for all the pharmaceutical corps' headhunters. Drugs that could be injected once a month and then switched on and off using a cellphone app were a major innovation, even if they didn't particularly care for her initial application. On the other hand, certain government agencies had a little interest in that facet too.
In her second year out of college, Tanija had a salary that most graduates could only dream of, and could surround herself with the best and brightest minds of her generation. It was a shame, but she'd never tell Jack that she actually had a job. And that meant the only friends she could invite round for some out-of-work socialising were those who were willing to pass as friends she'd met at the salon.
Jack never noticed the money. He never wondered how she had enough to buy so many expensive treatments, and he didn't notice extra deposits on their joint account, just enough to cover for any mistakes in the budget planning. When he was out coaching a community football team, a job that made him feel like a success even if the pay wasn't great, he assumed she was mostly at home watching TV, doing chores, or meeting with friends. He'd never guess that she was out at work for most of the day, or that she'd taken to hiring a maid so she wasn't quite so rushed off her feet. It was a constant double life, but to Tanija it was certainly worth it. She'd even developed additional drugs that meant – with the app Lisette had developed – she could adjust sliders or even schedule her own intelligence, sex drive, and energy levels. It was the best of both worlds, a bimbo behind closed doors and a successful businesswoman in public.
She carefully monitored the levels of the various placebos in the medicine cabinet, and adjusted her own levels to give Jack the effect he wanted. If he tried anything with her friends she'd have to tell them, and it was down to them if they wanted to experiment with the fantasy or let him assume they were more naturally resistant to that particular drug.
It was a lot of work to keep the fantasy running smoothly, and Tanija hated lying to the man she loved, when she was smart enough to think about it. But she consoles herself by remembering that the life he experiences is what he tried to get for himself, and seems to be exactly what he needs.
