This idea is dedicated to twilight, with thanks for all your support. And I hope that in the coming days, I will be able to continue posting bonus chapters, to make up for all the ones I missed in depression-month. Thank you twilight, and thank you to all of my other supporters who were patient enough to bear with me.
A story inspired by some of the 'serial recruitment' type stories I've seen around here. Often it seems that the 'master' barely takes part in the story, and he doesn't seem to care at all. So I thought I'd do it differently:
Jinnever C Thod is an archaeology student. He didn't want to be; he wanted to be a doctor, or some job that helps people. But he just doesn't have the coordination or memory for any of the jobs he wanted. He's good at reading old languages, but he can't see how that actually helps anybody, so he's mostly just coasting through life.
Until he's on a gap year from university, exploring some ruins in a remote jungle. An ancient civilisation, their language no longer known. Another member of his group is injured, they're cut off from everyone else at a small, isolated building in the jungle that hasn't yet been explored. In desperation, he uses one of the stone tables inside the building to cook some food and purify water for his injured friend. Rainbow sparks crackle around the altar; and he realises that he's awakened an ancient, forgotten deity. He gets one wish granted, as long as he makes a wish that the god finds acceptable (otherwise, he will just die). And he doesn't know what to ask for, until he realises that he could have a life that actually feels fulfilling, rather than just going through the motions doing research for its own sake.
He wishes to be a master of hypnosis. It seems logical: he's not good with gore, and isn't sure he'd be capable of being a real doctor. But if a divine blessing allowed him to actually understand the methods, he could be a really good therapist, and help people with whatever their problems are. And his wish is granted, but the wish comes with a catch. This god believes in equivalent exchange. So once he hypnotises someone, he has to tell them about his new god; but it's up to them if they become a believer. But as a chosen one of this god, he is responsible for the desires of the faithful; and he doesn't realise to start with what that will mean.
Getting back to college after the field trip, he realises that his ability to help people is still limited because he doesn't have any actual therapy qualifications; and getting them will be hard as long as he's about to start the final year of an archaeology and ancient cultures degre. But there's one student in his class who always seems depressed and lethargic; a loner who isn't happy that way, but has given up on trying to interact with other people for some reason. He doesn't know how to start, but decides that honesty is the best policy: He asks if he can hypnotise her, and says maybe he can help her find something to be cheerful about. And much to his surprise, she agrees. Kind of. She says that sounds super awkward, but she thinks it would be a fun game if he tries to hypnotise her without her realising until it's too late. That seems weird to him, but he goes along with it. He's a true master, after all, and can do that easily. So he gets her in trance, and asks if she knows why she's always so down; just hoping that it's something he can either help her with; or help her to get over.
She is jealous, because she sees acquaintances and classmates getting relationships and doing exactly what they want with their lives. But her kinks are so extreme that she knows she'll never get what she wants. Every kind of romance has given her nothing but disapointment, because she can't stop fantasising about the impossible. She loves stories where the character is brainwashed and turned into a helpless member of some "Master"'s harem, and she can't get over the fact that it can't work like that in the real world.
Except that now it can. She knows hypnosis isn't really that powerful; she's learned an awful lot about it. But she has seen just how powerful Jinnever's skills are, and she starts to hope that her dreams can actually be realised. When he lets her know (as he's required to) that he got this power as a gift from a forgotten god, she can't deny that it's real. So she is a believer now; and Jin is required to make sure her prayers are answered. He has to make her a part of a mind-controlled harem, just like she wants. Of course, a harem means he has to hypnotise and enslave someone else too. He doesn't like that, but he doesn't have a choice. That was the bargain.
So she starts out enslaving one girl, then another. And if they believe in his god, he has to answer their prayers. And he's amazed by just how many of those shallow prayers are asking for something kinky. And how many of those require him to enslave someone else in order to answer the prayer, and then he has to grant their prayers as well.
Even when some of his girls want to help recruit others for him, being a Master and cult leader is more work than he ever expected. But he knows that he won't ever stop, until he manages to make every one of his girls happy.
