Chapter Twenty-Two - Want
"You look really pretty.” Percy gave Baby an appreciative look for the umpteenth time since the night began. The girl smiling shyly in return. She smoothed down the material of her satin dress and looked back up at the boy sitting across from her at the rustic restaurant table.
He had done everything she had hoped for, what she'd seen in movies countless of times.
At 7PM sharp, he arrived at her house, opened the car door for her. They drove with some random pop song playing on the radio and he made the worst jokes— she laughed because it was funny how his face would contort in regret after he pitched a bad joke— then when they arrived at the towns local and only 'fancy' restaurant, he opened the door for her again.
They sat down at a table in the back of the restaurant, where the light was dimmed and it was serenely more quiet than the rest of the establishment. She ordered steak and Percy ordered from the vegetarian menu (it sparked a conversation about how Percy's dad was a vegetarian and that the boy often preferred no meat in his food.)
Once their dinner was over, they got dessert to share. Strawberry cheesecake and a Chai Tea mocha that Baby insisted on.
Forks collided as they fought for the last piece of the cheesecake and Percy laughed at the competitive frown on Baby's face as she maneuvered her hand around his and struck blindly at the plate.
“Fine fine, you can have it. It's hard to watch you struggle like this.” He joked as he sat back in his seat watching Baby huff as she put the last piece of cake in her mouth.
She shook her head at him, “I wasn't even struggling.” A small 'pfft' left her lips and Percy grinned.
He pushed the Chai mocha towards her, “Drink some first.”
Baby smiled immediately and took a sip of the mocha, a content sigh leaving her, “Take a sip, it's so good."
Unable to resist her demands, Percy took a hesitant sip and shrugged, he didn't hate it but he'd rather drink soda.
He gave the cup back to Baby, “Finish that.”
She narrowed her eyes at him and continued to drink the funny tasting drink, he watched with a starry look in his eyes. Everything about the night was perfect and so was she. His eyes traced her features like it was the first time he was seeing her, an implacable feeling of admiration rushing through his body.

Parking his car in the driveway of his house, Percy watched Baby run up the porch steps of her house and open the front door of her house.
His blue eyes grew out of focus for a moment after she disappeared into her dark, empty house. Ms. Martin's still wasn't home.
Heart racing, he leaned against his car.
Thoughts milling in his mind, thoughts like, tonight felt too short-it feels like a dream-the way I feel right now can't be real-she can't be real, no one so perfect could be real-why did I wait so long to talk to her? Make her laugh, make her smile- then he took a deep breath and soon after, he was moving. Fast strides towards the front door of the Martin's home.
He didn't knock, he knew she didn't lock the door behind herself, probably in hopes that her mom would be back soon. Percy didn't like that she did that but he wouldn't say anything about it now. He didn't want to say anything at all right now.
