F o r t y - f o u rPERCY heard her loud and clear, felt the fragility of her arms around him when she said with absolute resolution, I don't deserve you. She believed the words she spoke.
And his heart broke for her. For the fact that he couldn't change her mind no matter how untrue her words were.
Instead he just held her tight and whispered back, “You deserve more than me. You deserve the world Baby.”
He didn't expect a reply and he didn't receive one. They simply sat together in silence, hands caressing in silent consolation.
A few minutes passed, or maybe it was longer than that but Baby had fallen asleep and Percy stood slowly from his seat with her in his arms. He walked up the stairs and placed her onto his bed, covering her with a blanket and kissing her forehead gently.
With a heavy heart, he found Noah and sat beside him at the kitchen counter.
“I know you don't like me being nosy, but I got the gist of what's happening from the way you both are acting.” Noah said while he tapped his fingers against the marble countertop.
Percy sighed and shook his head.
Noah continued, “You can't take her pain, and you can't understand it either. But being miserable with her isn't going to help either one of you,” He glanced at the blonde and scanned his expression carefully, “Maybe you both should take time to yourselves. Let her process things alone, and you take a step back.”
A gob grew in Percy's throat, tears welling up in his eyes.
When he looked up at his best friend, the dam broke and he shuddered at the pressure in his chest, “I just want her to be happy, and I know,” His voice strained, “I know I'm not enough. She's always felt alone and it's so much deeper— so much stronger than all the love I could give her.”
Noah slipped off the barstool he was on and wrapped his arms around Percy, stroking his hair out of his face and letting him rest in his arms.
"It'll be okay, she loves you. This just isn't your fight.”
