Chapter Twenty-Three - Together
The front door slammed and Baby jostled up from where she sat on her bed, her shoes off and her dress about to follow suit. Her heart pounded so hard she heard it in her ears and she felt stuck in position on the edge of the bed, gripping the pastel colored duvet in her tense hands.
She heard steps racing up the stairs and snapped out of her daze, grabbing her bag, she rummaged through it till she found her phone.
Her fingers gripped around it and just as she was about turn the device on, her bedroom door flung open and her chest heaved with a relieved breath.
It was Percy.
“You scared me.” She let out a soft breath.
Percy said nothing, just stood in her doorway, his eyes wide and his lips parted as if he wanted to say something but was frozen in shock.
Her brows furrowed, “Percy, what's wrong?”
He looked conflicted then he blurted, “Be my girlfriend.”
Baby blinked, an invisible force clenching her heart tightly.
“I've liked you... For years,” The boy let out a deep breath, “Since the first time I saw you, and I never stopped and it's turned into something more. I love you so much that I can't even imagine how things would've turned out if I hadn't given you that ride to school and taken you out to ice cream, or insisted that you gave me your number. I can't imagine my world without you in it.”
He stepped into her room, “We haven't even tried being good friends for long, and we have a lot to learn about one another. But I want to do all that knowing you feel the way I feel... So I'm asking you to be mine. My Baby.”
For a moment, it seemed as if Baby couldn't speak at all. Then when she did, her voice was barely audible, but Percy heard, “Will you promise to stay if I say yes?”
The boy frowned, “Stay the night? Of course.”
She shook her head, “No, I mean, will you stay with me... Always. I don't think I want another person to make me feel alone again.” Her shoulders rose as she took in a breath. When she let it out, Percy made his way to her and sat beside her.
“I promise. You'll never be alone with me.” He smiled at her.

The two fell asleep side-by-side, and when the morning sun rose, they stayed in bed; awake beside each other.
“She didn't come home.” Baby whispered softly as she curled up into Percy's side.
The boy rubbed her back in response, “She will eventually.”
“Thank you for staying with me,” She murmured, her hands fiddled with the end of Percy's shirt, “So...”
Humming, the boy looked at her.
“Are we dating?”
Percy laughed, “You didn't say yes yet.”
A long pause ensued before a chirpy 'yes' left the girls lips and she hid her face in Percy's side afterwards.
"Now we're dating.”
