CHAPTER THIRTY-EIGHT

"What is this?" You asked, staring down at the lifeless body laying on the hospital bed in front of you.

Grandpa, Emma and Mrs. Sano began tearing up, unable to hold in their emotions any longer.

You turned to them and asked once again, "What happened to him?"

Mrs. Sano shook her head as she covered her mouth. "I don't... I don't know..." She sobbed, her legs became weak and she fell to the floor.

After a few more minutes, you walked out of the hospital room and met Mikey in the waiting room.

He was staring at the ground with such blank and dull eyes.

You crouched down to his level and held his hands.

"Mikey" You said his name and he responded with a small hum. "Can you please tell me what happened to Shinichiro?"

He slowly averted his gaze up at you as he slowly opened his mouth and began to speak.

Arriving home, you unlocked the front door then made your way inside the house and past the living room.

Mrs. Sano sat down on the couch, grieving over her oldest son's death. Grandpa sat down beside her, trying his best to comfort her but was too, heartbroken.

Mikey decided to stay with Emma to comfort her. He didn't want to leave her alone after what just happened.

But you? Who do you have?

Locking the door behind you, you stood in the dark bedroom. Just staring at your surroundings.

Your eyes happened to catch a glimpse of the picture frames on the wall.

Standing in front of the pictures, you took one off the wall and stared into it.

It was a picture of you and Shinichiro. The day when you two graduated from high school.

"Big bro Shin called me on the phone at 10 PM then told me to go to his motorbike shop"

Your eyes immediately widened as Mikey's words replayed in your head.

"He wouldn't tell me why he wanted me to go there so late at night. He just laughed and insisted I go there as soon as I could but when I got arrived... There was a crowd, police cars and an amulance.."

When he told you what happened while you were at the hospital.

"I squeezed into the crowd and saw big brother. I saw him being pulled on a bed into the back of the ambulance. He wasn't moving.."

It was exactly like the nightmare that Mikey had told you 7 years ago except it wasn't you who died now in reality. It's Shinichiro.

Why did it get reversed? Why was he the one that died? Why wasn't it you?

Your grip on the picture frame tightened as your breathing became rapid.

If you were there at Shinichiro's shop at that exact moment, would that have been your fate instead?

Your hands began trembling as you felt your blood rushing.

It could've been you.

It should've been you.

IT SHOULD'VE BEEN YOU WHO DIED.

Sounds of glass falling and shattering on the floor echoed in the room and soon, it all went quiet.

Sitting on the floor with a scissor in your hand. Pieces of your hair on the floor along with broken glass shards and picture frames as blood dripped down from your knuckles.
