CHAPTER FORTY-TWO

TW: MENTIONS OF SUICIDE

After Mikey's birthday, everything went back to how it used to be. And I'm not saying you got back to being that bright woman you used to be, no, I mean by you got back to locking yourself in your bedroom and shutting everyone out.

It seems as if everyone was pretty much moving on from Shinichiro's passing but you? You got worse day by day.

The only reason you decided to put some effort that day was because it was Mikey's birthday.

All the smiles that you had given that day, all the laughs and jokes.

They were all just forced.

You only did it so that he could still celebrate his birthday without having to worry about you. You didn't want him to feel alone.

Being alone is just like as if you've left him. You promised that you'll never leave him.

But what happened next, changed everything.

August 30th, 2003
Flipping the page of the comic book, Mikey read the text speech when all of a sudden, he heard a scream coming from outside.

"Ahh!"

He immediately rushed outside and saw Emma standing in front of your bedroom, holding her hand while looking down at Tofu.

"Emma? What happened?" He asked her as he quickly jogged to her and grabbed her hand.

He examined her skin and saw the blood coming out of the cut on the palm of her hand.

"I came to ask (Y/n)-san if she wanted dinner but I saw Tofu standing with two of her front paws on the door so I tried picking her up and she scratched me..." Emma explained. "But the scratch isn't that deep so I guess it's fine.."

Mikey pressed his finger on the cut and ushered for Emma to follow him to the kitchen so that he could disinfect it for her but was then stopped by something pulling on his pants.

The two of them looked down and saw... Tofu? She was biting on the the hem of Mikey's pants.

"Tofu? What's wrong?" He asked and got a 'meow' as a response. "I need to disinfect Emma's cut, we'll play later okay?"

For some reason, Tofu became aggressive. She shook her head rapidly while still biting on the hem of his pants.

It was quite unusual seeing her like this because ever since she got here, she's always been a gentle cat.

When Tofu realized that she had gotten their attention, she let go of Mikey's pants and turned around to the bedroom door and 'meowed' as she tapped on the door with her paw.

"Does she want to go inside?" Emma guessed then went up to the door and twisted the doorknob but to her surprise, the door wouldn't open. "Uhm Mikey... It's locked.."

"What?" Mikey reached his hand out and attempted to open the door but Emma wasn't lying, the door really is locked.

It's strange since at this time of the day, you wouldn't lock your bedroom door. You only lock it once it hits 12 AM. Right now it's only 9:30 PM.

He knocked once then pressed his ear against the door. "(Y/n)-san!! Why is the door locked??" He shouted but no response. "(Y/n)-san?" Even after a few more calls and knocks, he still didn't get a response from you.

"Emma go call mom and grandpa!" Mikey told and she quickly went to go get them.

Emma returned shortly after with Mrs. Sano and grandpa following behind her.

"Manjiro what happened?!" His mother asked with concern.

"Do you have a spare key for (Y/n)-san's bedroom? She locked the door and won't talk to us!" Mikey asked.

"I'm afraid not... This room is the only one in the house without a spare key.." She replied.

At this point, Tofu started scratching the door and even started screaming and hissing.

"We have to open this door!" Mikey said as he twisted the doorknob while banging his arm on the door.

He took a few steps back and with all his strength, he launched at the door and kicked it open.

As soon as the door swung open, Tofu ran inside.

Mikey turned to his family and they all had the exact same worried expression on their faces.

He gulped up the lump in his throat before stepping foot inside the bedroom.

The whole room was a mess. The picture frames from the walls were all on the floor completely shattered to pieces. The lightbulbs were all broken. Papers, books and everything were scattered around the room.

'Meoww'

Everyone turned to the sound and saw Tofu sitting on the floor in front of the bathroom and to their surprise, the light was switched on.

As they got closer, they could hear the faucet running.

Mikey finally reached to the bathroom and peeked his head out from the wall and felt his heart drop.

Emma, Mrs. Sano and grandpa all gasped upon seeing the sight in front of them.

There you were. Laying inside the bathtub of your own blood with a piece of the shard from the broken mirror in your hand as red liquid trailed down your arm.

"OH MY GOD!" Mrs. Sano panicked as she sprinted to the bathtub and hurriedly pulled you out from the water. "DAD CALL THE AMBULANCE!" She yelled and grandpa quickly went out to go call for help.

Mikey covered Emma's eyes as she began to sob.

Him on the other hand, didn't cry. He just stared at your unresponsive body with wide eyes, completely dazed.

"I'm not sure when she'll wake up but there's a 60% chance that she might end up brain dead as well... I'm really sorry ma'am." The doctor announced as Mrs. Sano fell down to her knees as tears streamed down her face.

...

"FUCK!" Mikey slammed his hands on the sink as water dripped from his head.

He turned on the faucet and splashed water on his face, repeating the same words over and over.

"Don't come out. Don't come out. Don't come out."

He raised his head up and stared at his reflection through the mirror, panting heavily as warm liquid poured out of his eyes uncontrollably.

"(Y/n)-san...

You broke our promise."
