The very next day while walking around Kabuki, it seemed like everyone on the street now knew about Otose's condition. They weren't talking crap about her though, they were more so... saying how much they owed the old woman.
You were glad that there were still a lot of people here that didn't hold her in contempt. However, now that she was in hospital and had limited ability to rein her power as one of the four Devas, some residents were considering skipping town.
That's one of the reasons why you were standing in front of Otose's Snack Bar. The current occupants were currently moving out and packing up their things. But of course, there would always be one person who would never leave.
"Gintoki," you called out to the man in the back of the shop who was about to take one of the weapons on display. "Where are you off to?"
"With Otose-san's memories of her husband too..." Shinpachi came up from behind you. From his words, you assumed that the weapon belonged to Otose's husband.
"Why are you here?" he asked.
Kagura placed her hands on her hips, "You're the one who said we could do as we please."
"Take us with you. We can help you fight."
Gintoki picked up the weapon and approached you three, but he didn't stop—he walked right through you. "Don't get the wrong idea. I'm just here because Gran told me to pick this up for her."
Before he could walk any further, Kagura picked him up by his collar, "Enough already... Neither of you get it... If you shoulder the burden alone and leave us behind... How are we supposed to be happy you saved our lives? How are we supposed to be happy that Gran saved us if she's gone? If you're fine, life won't be any fun!"
He looked down at Kagura's teary eyes, "Life doesn't need to be fun. I just want you to live. I don't want to go through that again. I don't want anyone to die."
Shinpachi's fist reached Gintoki's face before your fist could. He flung the older man through the paper doors onto the tatami mats in front of Otose's husband's shrine. "Aren't you supposed to be Sakata Gintoki? The man who's let so much slip away, who's failed to protect so much... but swore that he would never run away from his responsibilities!
"Didn't you promise her husband?! Once you've decided to protect something, you'll protect it to the very end! Isn't that what makes you Sakata Gintoki?! So what if Otose's life was in danger?! This isn't enough to kill Otose-san off! Isn't enough to kill us off! Isn't enough to kill you off! Because you're going to protect us! Because we're going to protect you! Isn't that what Yorozuya is about? Isn't that how the three of us protected so much over the years?"
"You seriously need to think about how we feel in this situation too," you pat Shinpachi's shoulder and then kneeled in front of Gintoki. "Look at me, and look at us. Do you really think that we can't protect ourselves? Half the time, we're here protecting you. I know you won't let anyone die, and guess what? We're not gonna let you die either."
Tama and Catherine had them appeared out from behind another set of doors and revealed themselves. Tama walked out first and crouched beside Gintoki, "We have lot lost anything yet. So you must not lose your soul. Gintoki-sama, you have protected us many times. No matter how dire of hopeless the situation was."
"We trust you," you then lifted up his chin and looked into his eyes.
"So it's your turn to trust us," Catherine continued. "We can do this together. We can protect Otose-san's home, our home. Protect the town which brought us together." The man pressed his lips together and stood up. He nodded his head and walked over towards Otose's husband's shrine.
