A Tragic Backstory Makes a Great Hero

You always hear the sob stories of pro heroes. How they overcame something traumatic and tried their best to become something better. Sob stories boost approval ratings, I guess.

That's why I don't talk about my story. When I tell people my story, they look at me with pity and remorse. It all seems so normal to me, not having a mother. Before you say 'how sad' or 'I'm sorry' just listen. My mom had me at 16, young I know. My dad only found out when she went into labor that she was pregnant with his kid.  My dad wasn't able to raise me at the time because of his pro hero training, so they made a deal. My mom would raise me until he graduated and landed a job, then she would disappear and never have to talk to either of us again. I don't really remember her much, seeing as I was only 3 when she vanished. Honestly, I'm glad I don't remember. That's why I hate when people take pity on me. I don't have to deal with the fact that she left because I don't remember, but everyone walks on eggshells around me regardless.

Anyway, fast forward to the age of 6. My dad was balancing being a pro hero and a dad, it was exhausting for him. My dad had some pro hero friends who would look after me when he was working, mostly Present Mic and Midnight. He was tired and worn out all the time, even six-year-old me noticed. So, when he got the offer to be a teacher at UA he jumped at the chance. Now, I knew my dad was safe and would be able to be there for me.

Then, my quirk began to show. It was just small things at first, like breaking jars and twisting doorknobs a little too far and they broke. My dad finally realized that it was a manifestation of my quirk when I jumped from the ground onto the roof to get a ball that I had gotten stuck.

My quirk is called bio-manipulation. I can change any bodily function in my own or another person's body. For example, I can increase my calcium level at will to make my bones as hard as possible. I can also increase a person's melatonin levels and make them fall asleep. The catch is that I have to be within 5 meters of the other person and I have to be able to see or touch them. I also have to use my quirk sparingly because whatever I increase is taking from other things. Back to the calcium example, if I continuously harden my bones then my glucose might decrease, and I could pass out.

With a quirk like mine, it was inevitable that people would take an interest in me. I had been training to be a pro hero since we found out what my quirk was. Not that I was complaining, my dad was my idol and if I could be anything like him, I would gladly take the opportunity. I hadn't gone to a normal school because of how busy my dad was. Instead, I spent my day in the UA teachers' lounge, being tutored by Nezu, the principal of UA. As a result, I was not only a talented quirk user, but I was pretty damn smart.

Anyways, that brings us to the present time. Currently, I was out running errands, and getting stuff to make dinner. Making dinner was always something I had done for my dad ever since I learned to read and use the stove. I was walking along the busy street, on my way to the grocery store, watching and analyzing the people around me like I always did.

Suddenly, a loud bang pulled me from my thoughts. I turned the corner and was met with a large cloud of smoke. It took a moment for the smoke to clear, but when it did, I saw a boy about my age with spikey blond hair being held by a villain made of slime. It looked like the boy was the one creating the explosions as an attempt to escape from the villain. I looked around me frantically, hoping to see a pro hero. Thankfully, I did. "It's taken someone hostage! How dare you prey on a child!" The hero Death Arms shouts while launching himself at the villain. He punches the monster with his metal fist, but nothing happens, instead the sludge starts to pull him in. "What the hell is this? Some kind of goo?" The villain slams Death Arms into the wall and the other pros go to help him.

"Stay back or I'll snap his neck!" The sludge monster threatens. The boy, not liking the idea of having his neck broken, begins to struggle harder, and actually frees himself partially.
