Chapter 34. Psychology

Kat woke up groggy. Her head ached badly and she could barely recall what happened. But as her head cleared the memories came flooding back. She jerked but found she couldn't move an inch. She was tied up in a chair, oh God. It brought back memories and she had to take deep measuring breaths before the panic attack would overwhelm her. She looked around and spotted Chad leaning against the wall watching her with interest.

"Why?" She asked.

"Oh haven't figured it out yet Princess? Still think I'm Chad? I would've thought you smarter than that"

"Aldron?" She asked, almost afraid to hear the answer.

"Oh you wish Princess. You would've been so much better off if it were him who took you. He's too soft and he hesitated to do what needed to be done. Me on the other hand, I hate even the mere sight of your pretty little face so I recon I'll enjoy this"

Kat gulped. "Who are you?" She asked.

"I can be whoever I wanna be. I can be Karen" and immediately she morphed into Karen. "Or Cain" and so she was. "I can be anyone I want" the being laughed.

"You're a shape shifting demon" Kat said.

"Way to state the obvious Princess"

"And let me just hazard a guess. You want me for the prophecy don't you?"

"Bingo. You're really good at this game" it mocked.

"What did you do to Chad?" Kat asked in increasing worry that didn't concern her whereabouts. He and Kayden seemed pretty close.

"Nothing. He's still in the magical realm trying to rule your boyfriend's kingdom for him" Kat sighed in relief. "Though I did seal the portal to the magical realm from this side and the inside. No one's getting in or out"

"How? No one's that powerful"

"Kayden is" she said. Kat narrowed her eyes, then gasped.

"When you take the shape of someone, you also get their powers"

"Exactly. Smarter than I thought I see"

Kat's heart sank. That meant it had access to ridiculous amounts of power from everyone he could impersonate. Kat really hoped it didn't fry her with Bub's blue flames again because that would surely suck.

"Oh you and I are gonna have a blast" it said.

Kat sighed and really looked around. They seemed to be in a cave. Her roaming eyes returned to the demon who watched her closely with Cain's dark eyes.

"Show me your real face. I should at least know what my captor looks like" Kat just managed to hide her shaking voice.

The demon morphed into Melody.

"This is your real face?" She asked increadulously.

"No. But the real Melody died in the attack against her family. You really thought we'd let her come warn you? I took her form and came to Kayden's house to check if you really were there according to my sources"

Kat's heart shattered. "Oh God. God no. Ash is gonna be devastated. She was all he had" she began sobbing. For her best friend and for the vibrant little girl she'd come to love.

The demon burst into laughter. "Just kidding! You should see the look on your face! Oh did I mention I absolutely adore psychological torture?"

Kat was utterly confused. How could someone lie about such a thing?

"What?"

"Oh you're still confused. So cute"

Kat began to try and even out her breathing and stop crying. She just about succeeded. Melody was safe. She was okay. She hoped.
