2006

The lung transplant was a success but I decided to continue on the path to becoming a doctor, mainly because I was only halfway through my third year of pre-med but was so far ahead that I was gearing up to start actual med school in the fall.

But then it happened again. There was something not quite right about my body and I knew as I gave myself an exam that there was undoubtedly a lump on my breast. I tried to take a deep breath and convince myself it wasn't going to happen again, while shakily making an appointment with my oncologist later that week. That would confirm anything but until then, I was healthy and I was living my life.

I took shakier breaths than I ever had before while I waited in the oncology department of Seattle Grace. It was a place I had been before when I was getting radiation for my lungs, but I hadn't been here in almost a year.

"Taylor Dawson?" I stood to my feet and made my way into the exam room.

"Hi Taylor, I wasn't expecting to see you in here again" Doctor Hyland, my oncologist from my original cancer journey, greeted me.

"I know, but I found a lump on my breast. Normally I wouldn't get so worried but seeing as I've already been through cancer before, I figured it pays to be a little cautious" She nodded and asked me to take my shirt and bra off so she could examine me. I did as she asked.

After being in the hospital for so long after my lungs crapped out on me, I learned not to have a lot of shame around medical professionals. She prodded the lump and looked over it before sighing.

"We'll need to get it biopsied or removed, so I'll have to send you to surgical. Any particular surgeon you want to see?" I nodded.

"Miranda Bailey" Doctor Hyland nodded as well.

"I'll call her right now"

Miranda Bailey may be small, but that woman can sure move fast when she needs to.

"Taylor Dawson, what in God's good name are you doing back here?" I smiled as much as I could, but I was feeling pretty devastated right about now.

"Believe me, this is the last place I want to be. No offense" She sighed.

"Come on, I've got a bed in pre-op waiting for you." I followed her to the pre-op ward and made myself comfortable on the bed.

"Okay we're going to get some scans of you, they may be able to pick up on it if it's cancer before we even biopsy but we still want to have a go at removing whatever this is" I nodded as a few other doctors walked in. I smiled when I saw George, Alex, and Izzie.

"Hey you guys"

"I thought we agreed never to see each other again Taylor?" George teased, me shrugging.

"Guess I couldn't stay away"

"I need one of you to take Taylor for a CT scan. If we know what we're dealing with, we might get this thing out before even knowing it's cancer. But to be safe, take her for a PET scan next"

"I'll do it" George offered.

"Yeah, we just heard you were here and wanted to say hello" Alex said. I smiled and leaned back on the bed.

"Hello, hopefully after this it's also goodbye" They all chuckled and George began to wheel me to the scans.

"Why does this keep happening to me, George?" I asked. He shrugged.

"You can't keep away from me. It's normal" I rolled my eyes.

"You wish O'Malley"

My CT was first and I asked George how it was looking. He said it wasn't big and he was sure someone would be able to remove it quite easily. But he also reminded me he was only in his second year of residency and had absolutely no idea.
