2017
"Woah, you look stunning" Jackson's voice said when I walked out of the bedroom and into the living room. I smiled.
"You don't look so bad yourself Avery" I took in his suit. It was simple and classy, and God did Jackson know how to work a suit.
"Thank you, should we get going?" I nodded and he held his hand out for me. I took it, swallowing my nerves as we walked down to the car.
I had met Jackson's mother once. Catherine Fox was an impressive surgeon and had achieved many great things in her time as one. She was now married to Doctor Webber and thanks to the Harper Avery Foundation, now the Catherine Fox Foundation, saving the hospital in 2012, she was pretty prestigious in the life of Grey Sloan. And I had met her once, back in my first year at Grey Sloan. I was petrified of her then, and I'm petrified of her now.
Now was different though. Back when I first came to Grey Sloan, I was just freaked to be working with people who had seen me at my lowest, I was the new girl in town, and I was hiding the fact that I had cancer for a lot of it. But now, I was the woman her son was dating, the reason he would not go back to April. Something I knew for a fact she still begged he would do, for the sake of Harriet if nothing else. So, meeting her like that scared me.
Not that Jackson would bring it up. Even when I told him last week that I would go public, he told me to do it for us and not for anyone else. And he'd been right. The cons outweighed the pros, so we were keeping it to ourselves a little while longer.
"You okay?" Jackson asked as he drove.
"Nervous" I admitted. Jackson's hand reached across to mine, his fingers interlocking with my own. He gave me a reassuring squeeze.
"It's gonna be fun, remember?"
"What if I say something stupid to your mom?"
"That's what you're worried about?"
"Yeah? Kind of! What if she finds out tonight?" Jackson sighed.
"If she does, which I'm telling you she won't but if she does, then we work through it together. I'm not gonna let you handle it alone, you know that" I smiled, holding his hand still. "She already knows we live together, and she knows about what you've been through in your residency because doctors talk. If it comes out, then she's not going to be all that surprised"
"She'll just see me as a downgrade with a reduced life sentence"
"No, she'll see you as an impressive doctor who makes her son happy. And if she doesn't, I'll make sure she does" I smiled.
"You're amazing, I'd be lost without you" Jackson chuckled.
"I believe we were both messes when we first started this, I'd be just as lost without you" We drove in silence for the rest of the drive, my breathing hitching in my throat when Jackson pulled up outside the location of the Gala. "Relax, okay? You're my prospective chief of trauma, my star resident, and my friend. You've got every right to be here"
"Okay, let's do this" Jackson grinned, and we climbed out of the car, walking inside.
"Jackson, honey, it's so good to see you" Catherine Avery greeted us, pulling her son in for a hug.
"Woah, this looks extravagant" Jackson chuckled, taking in the décor.
"Only the best for this foundation. Hello Doctor Dawson, my dear, it's good to see you again" I nodded with a smile.
"You as well, Doctor Fox. This looks incredible" She smiled.
"I like this one. Go help yourselves to some champagne and mingle. Jackson, there's a group of investors over this way I'd like for you to meet" We nodded and made our way to the bar, each grabbing a glass of champagne.
