2014
"Mom? Why are you here?" I heard Jackson Avery say. I looked up from where I stood in the foyer of the hospital's main entrance and saw Catherine Avery walking towards him. My eyes grew wide, and I turned to Luke.
"Crap, we should get out of here before we see something we don't want to"
"What?"
"Trust me, let's go" I began to walk out from behind the desk, but Catherine saw Luke and me standing to leave and smiled at the two of us.
"Hello, you two must be the new residents. I'm Doctor Catherine Avery, head of the Harper Avery Foundation and Jackson's mother" She held her hand out.
"It's lovely to meet you, Doctor Avery. I'm Doctor Gallagher and this is Doctor Dawson" Luke said, shaking her hand. I followed and shook it next, a nervous smile plastered on my face. I looked at Jackson and saw his eyes full of confusion. I cleared my throat and took my hand back, hoping like hell she'd move on and not ask us any questions.
"Mom, what brings you to Seattle?" Jackson asked again, although at least he was nicer this time around.
"I'm just stopping in, checking on my baby and whatnot." She said with a smile sent Jackson's way before turning back to Luke and I. Great.
"So, where have the two of you come from?" She asked.
"Mom" Jackson protested.
"I'm getting to know our new residents, dear. Leave me be. You go do what you need done, I know my way around enough" Jackson rolled his eyes. Luke entertained conversation.
"I was at Johns Hopkins, but I wanted to be home. I grew up in Seattle" Catherine smiled.
"Hopkins is a wonderful place, but I'm sure you're glad to be back on your coast" Luke nodded.
"Very glad. And Doctor Dawson transferred from UCLA" Catherine chuckled and looked at me.
"Does Doctor Dawson speak for herself?" I felt my face heat up and I cleared my throat again.
"I was at UCLA's Reagan Hospital. They fought a lot of other hospitals for me, and even more so when I chose to come to Seattle" Catherine was smiling.
"Ah, I know Bill Klein well and I'm sure you must have been worth it if he put up a fight for you." She said with a wink. I nodded, forcing another small smile.
"It was hard to leave, but I'm glad to be here"
"Alright Mom, we're gonna let the residents do their jobs now" Jackson said, shooting Luke and me a warning glance. We both quickly turned and left.
"What are we supposed to do as our jobs? I was on Avery's service today" Luke said. I shrugged.
"Find Webber and see where you're needed? I'm meant to be covering the pit"
"I'll come to the pit. My sewing skills have been neglected lately for actual surgery" He joked. I shoved him.
"Hey, you're getting surgeries though. Looks like we're not so hated around here anymore" He chuckled.
"I guess you've got a point. I should be smart and go find Doctor Webber though, shouldn't I?" I nodded.
"I mean, if you're wanting surgeries in the future then yes I would"
We walked to the pit together anyway, Luke figuring he'd start there and work inwards to find Doctor Webber. I walked up to Chief Hunt.
"Where do you need me, Chief?" I asked. He looked at me, almost relieved to see me. I mean seeing as my first weeks here I was basically a scut monkey and the pit's bitch, I knew how to work quickly down here. I'm not surprised he was glad I was here; it made his job easier at least.
