Wednesday: Defense

"What do you think we'll be doing today in Defensive Magic?," Sky asks as they make their way to the classroom.

"Who knows," Sarah says joining them. "Whatever it is, we are sure to learn something new."

"True, Mr. Lupin makes sure of that." Charlotte says as they enter the classroom. Only to find Ms. Emmaline Goode in there.

Once the bell rings she begins to talk. "Now as you all know tomorrow night is a full moon as such, Mr. Lupin is preparing."

"Oh, crap, actually I forgot." Some of the students whisper and mumble.

"Quiet, please." Everyone turns back to her. "As such, today Mr. Lupin has arranged with Mr. Black for you to have a joint class with the Offensive magic class. This will be a time to test you endurance and test your shields. As this class mostly focuses on protective magic while the Offensive magic class focuses on spells mainly used for attacking with. Now then, let us go meet with Mr. Black and his class in one of the dueling rooms so we can begin. Please bring your bags with you as we may not be coming back here before school ends."

Everyone grabs their things and follows Ms. Goode to the dueling room. They meet up with the Offensive Magic class on the way and Blaise, Norville, and Thomas make their way to the girls of their group. " This should be fun." Blaise says.

"Yes, I wonder how long I'll be able to maintain my shield." Sarah says.

"I'm not too worried about Sky with a shield, she can wandlessly hold one for hours," Thomas says, "not to mention put it up wordlessly."

"Thomas," Sky exclaims, glaring at her twin with a blush on her face.

"Attention, everyone," Sirius calls from the front of the crowd. Everyone puts their attention on him and the vice-principal. "Please put your bags at the side of the room, you will only need your wands today." Everyone quickly runs to put their bags down, before returning to stand back in front of the teachers.

"Now, everyone please find a partner be aware you will not remain with this person the entirety of the class period Mr. Lupin or myself will be coming around periodically to switch partners around. This will allow you to go against those stronger than you, those equal to and those weaker than you, because you never know the power of the person who attacks you and we want you to be prepared." Ms. Goode says.

"My class if you manage to break through the Defensive Magic students shield immediately stop firing at them and send a spark up so that either Ms. Goode or myself can come over and make sure that they are okay and not suffering from whatever spell you just threw at them and so we can switch the two of you to different partners."

"Another thing, if you haven't already noticed each of you now has an arm band. The green bands mark you as a Defensive magic student and the Red bands as a Offensive magic student. Now pick your first partner."

Bella and Blaise immediately pair up. Sky ends up with Norville, Thomas ends up with Charlotte and Sarah ends up with a girl who introduces herself as Maria Sanchez. "Everyone paired up? Good, begin."

Spells start flying and shields shimmer into existence as the spells bounce off of them except for one where the spells get absorbed instead. "Sky, that's cheating," Norville says with a sigh.

"No, it's not, Norville. Just because the shield does not have a name or incantation does not mean I can't use it." Sky replies.

"True, but it absorbs the power of the spell to maintain itself and all you have to do is cancel it." Norville says, "so the use of it, right now, actually does not make since we are supposed to be testing our endurance."

"Hello, you two, how is it going over here?" Sirius says walking over to the bickering duo. "I don't see any spells being fired."

"No, because Sky isn't really testing her endurance."

"How so?" Emmaline asks, joining the group.

"She is using her special shield."

"Special shield?" Ms. Goode asks.

"Yes, ma'am. She has a shield that absorbs the power from any attack to power itself."

"Oh, that is interesting, but I don't see how that is an issue that means she is better off in a duel than most people if she doesn't have to maintain the shield. This just means she can last until her opponent runs out of magic and then take them down." Emalline States. "How did you come up with a shield like this?"

"My mother," Sky mumbles. "However, it does not stop physical attacks."

"Okay, well, she can keep using her shield and we'll just have to time how long you last, so you two will remain partners until Norville runs out of magic." Ms. Goode says. She then casts a tempus and then has Norville start firing again.

Norville shrugs and starts firing spells again. The final bell rings and Norville finally stops. Sky stands up from where she had summoned her Advanced Healer's homework and started on it.

Bella and Blaise join them and while Bella seems fine Blaise looks a little tired. "How are the three of you not exhausted?"

"We have larger magical cores than you, apparently," Bella says, with smile. Norville and Sky leave it at that as they head over to their things.
