"What kept you," Sky asks as she joins them.
"I wanted to have a chat with the professor. He taught me at Hogwarts and he seems happier here."
"That's good," Thomas says.
“Yeah, it is. The students used to call him the Dungeon Bat because he dressed like a bat and he barely left the dungeon.”
“Well, he definitely wasn’t dressed like a bat today.” Sky says, as they follow their maps to their next classes. “Well, my class is down this hall so see you two at lunch.”
“Bye, sis,” Thomas calls after her.
“So, you two seem really close.”
He shrugs. “Closer than our mother would like us to be, that is for sure. Mother is not particularly fond of Sky.”
“Okay, well, I leave you here. I’ve got Beginner’s Healing now.”
“Okay, see you at lunch. I have to get outside for Creature Care.” Thomas heads off. Bella heads down the hallway to a classroom just off the Medical wing of the school. She steps into the classroom and sits down in the middle of the room. A few other older students walk in and sit down. A bunch of first years and second years come in and then the bell rings.
A lady in a nurses uniform walks in. “Good morning, everyone. I’m Nurse Genia. I teach the Beginner’s Healing class. I’m one of six Mediwitches employed by Ilvermorny. Then there are two doctors employed as well. This class will be learning about different basic healing spells, diagnosing whether the patient is worse than they are letting on, if they need to see a doctor or if a licensed mediwitch can handle it. We will also cover some of the deadliest illnesses in both the Nomaj world and the Magical world. Any questions?”
A brunette in the second row raises her hand. Nurse Genia nods at her. “Will we be able to learn from any of the other mediwitches employed here? And doctors?”
“Excellent questions. The other mediwitches will come speak to you for a day each. This is because there a few different positions and jobs a mediwitch can have and each of us was employed and a Magical hospital before coming to work for Ilvermorny. They never take any one fresh out of a training program but prefer we get some experience in hospitals first. As for the doctors, one of them will come to speak to the class about halfway through the semester about advancing your healing training and becoming doctors rather than just mediwitches. Any other questions?”
A blond boy at the back of the classroom is called on. “I heard there is an Advanced Healers class offered here?”
“Correct, the requirements to get into that class is an Acceptable or Poor in this class which will get you into Mediocre Healing and you will need an Exceeds Expectations or Outstanding in that class to get into the Advanced Healing class. So I realize that some of you are in your sixth year now so you can take the Mediocre Healing class in your seventh year and come back for Advanced healing after you graduate. Or you can take a correspondence course, though we don’t recommend that because you need a doctor present for some of the spell work, until you are licensed to do it on your own.”
Bella raises her hand. “Yes, Miss. Le Faye.”
“Would it be possible to take Mediocre Healing over the summer and take Advanced Healing in my seventh year.”
“I suppose so if you could find a tutor willing to take you on over the summer. Of course you would have to be able to afford to pay this tutor.” Bella smiles at her. “Any more quetions?” No one raise their hand. “Okay, then we will move on. Now this class will be different from your other classes in a major way. We will be doing practice in this class using dummies,” she indicates to the back of the classroom. “I expect you all to do the assigned reading at home and we will do a fifteen minute review at the beginning of class before moving to practicing it on the models in the back of the classroom. We may have the other medical personnel in here to help me supervise you during practice but other than their visits that is the only time you will see them. Your grade will be based on participation and some pop quizes I will give through out the year and these homework packets that you will need to complete each night at you do the reading.” A two page packet appears on Bella’s desk. “Since we haven’t done any reading yet. You may all get started on these packets.”
Bella pulls out her book opens to the appropriate chapter and begins filling out the worksheet as she reads through the book, highlighting as she goes. Questions in one color and what she feels is important points in another.
Suddenly a shadow falls over her desk, she looks up at two students. One seems a bit nervous and the other one has a huge smile plastered on her face. “Hey, you’re new, right?”
“Yes,” Bella says with a nod. “My name is Belladonna Le Faye.”
“I’m Sarah Smith, and this is my cousin Charlotte Goldstein. Mind if we join you?”
“No, not at all.” They summon chairs and sit down.
“We justed wanted to come and get to know you. Charlotte just transferred here last year after her mom killed her dad. Jealousy and a bit of insanity. Anyway, I’ve been doing my best to help Charlotte out, kind of shy if you couldn’t tell. I thought maybe another transfer student would make a good friend for her.”
“Maybe, but it is really up to her if she wants to be my friend or not. How about we do our work here and you two can join me and the other new transfer students for lunch?”
“That sounds wonderful.” They each turn back to their packets. Bella glances at the two girls and notices that they seem to be working together. Laughing a little as they go. Charlotte is slower than her cousin and she carefully writes down each answer. Sarah has a scrap piece of paper that she has numbered as she goes through the chapter revisiting the questions and adding small details to her answers. Bella looks at her own packet where she is writing her answers with a muggle device, a pencil. Her eraser is at the ready and she smiles as she continues with her packet.
