Taehyung finally opened the door and entered as quietly as possible, tiptoeing into the dimly lit room, careful not to disturb the serene slumber of the baby resting in the cradle. His heart softened the moment his eyes fell on the tiny figure, curled up under a soft blanket, unaware of the commotion outside.
As the others waited outside the room, giving Taehyung the space to connect with the baby .
Jungkook stood just outside the half-open door, craning his neck to catch a glimpse. His curiosity was piqued, but the partially closed door denied him a proper view, leaving him a little frustrated. He sighed, feeling an inexplicable pull towards the child, a sense of attachment growing stronger with each passing second.
Meanwhile, the elders sat nearby, engaging in polite conversation, though the atmosphere was gradually getting tense. The Jeons and Parks had never met before this occasion, and while the engagement of Yoongi and Jimin had brought the Kims closer to the Jeons, the Parks remained somewhat distant.
Ye-Jun and Ha-rin, aware of the growing tension, were doing their best to keep the mood light, offering warm smiles and initiating friendly chatter. "It’s strange, isn’t it? How families come together at times like these," Ha-rin said softly, glancing at her husband, who nodded in agreement.
“Yes, but it’s moments like these that create bonds,” Ye-Jun replied, trying to ease the stiffness.
Back outside, the younger generation stood awkwardly on the sidelines. Jungkook, Soo-ah, and Min-jun exchanged hesitant glances, none of them knowing the other well enough to strike up a casual conversation. Min-jun’s mind raced as he recalled the first time he saw Jungkook. The image of Jungkook’s captivating eyes and calm demeanour haunted him ever since their chance encounter. Now, knowing that Jungkook was the youngest Jeon, the mystery deepened.
He's the one Min-jun thought to himself, his eyes unconsciously tracing Jungkook’s figure. The first person who’s ever made me feel this way
Soo-ah, however, was getting bored.
She glanced around, her eyes narrowing at the closed door. A mischievous idea popped into her head, and without thinking twice, she strode forward. She ignored the confused looks thrown her way as she reached for the door handle.
Inside the room, Taehyung was seated by the table, his gaze fixed adoringly on the baby. The soft rise and fall of the infant’s chest, the peaceful expression on its tiny face, made his heart swell with an unfamiliar warmth. He didn’t dare touch the baby, afraid he might wake him up. Just watching from afar was enough for him.
But Soo-ah had other plans.
Her high heels clacked against the floor as she made her entrance, disturbing the tranquillity in the room. Taehyung's eyes snapped up, and he frowned in confusion as she stepped in, flashing him a smile that didn’t quite reach her eyes.
"Soo-ah, what are you doing here?" Tae asked, his voice laced with surprise.
Before he could get a proper answer, the baby let out a loud, piercing cry, startled by the noise. Taehyung’s heart dropped. His immediate instinct was to comfort the child, but he was frozen in shock, unsure how to handle a crying newborn. He looked helplessly at Soo-ah, whose forced smile had disappeared, replaced with a look of irritation.
The door creaked open further as Ha-rin and the other elderly ladies rushed in upon hearing the baby’s cries. Ha-rin’s face softened the moment she saw her grandchild. "Oh my sweet angel," she cooed, her voice tender as she approached the crib.
Taehyung’s worry only intensified as he watched his mother bend over to pick up the baby. "Mom, please be careful," he urged, his voice filled with concern. "He’s so small…"
Ha-rin chuckled softly. "Bear, I’ve raised three children. I think I know how to handle a baby," she reassured him with a warm smile. Gently, she lifted the baby into her arms, swaying him side to side in an attempt to soothe him. But the cries only grew louder.
Outside, Jungkook shifted nervously, his heart squeezing painfully with every wail that came from inside the room. He couldn’t explain why, but the baby’s cries felt personal, like they were tugging at his soul. "What’s wrong?" he muttered to himself, his eyes fixed on the door.
Min-jun, who had been silently watching Jungkook, noticed the growing discomfort on the younger man's face. He took a step forward, wanting to say something, but stopped short, unsure of how to approach Jungkook without making him more uncomfortable.
Inside the room, Irene stepped forward. "Let me try," she offered, reaching out for the baby. Ha-rin handed the child over, but despite Irene’s gentle rocking and soothing words, the baby refused to calm down, crying even harder.
"I think he's hungry," Irene said softly, glancing at Ha-rin.
"Of course, how could I forget?" Ha-rin exclaimed, lightly smacking her forehead. "He hasn’t been fed yet. Let me call the nurse." She quickly left the room, leaving the others in a state of worry.
As the minutes dragged on, Taehyung's anxiety grew. "Why won’t he stop crying?" he whispered, almost to himself, running a hand through his hair in frustration.
Jungkook, standing outside, could no longer stay still. When he saw Ha-rin return with the nurse and a bottle of milk, he quickly approached her. "Mrs. Kim," he said hesitantly, his voice trembling slightly, "Can I come in? Please, I want to help."
Ha-rin was taken aback by Jungkook’s sudden eagerness. She had always known him to be polite and reserved, but this urgency in his voice was new. "Of course, Jungkook. You don’t have to ask," she said with a smile, stepping aside to let him in.
Jungkook entered the room, his steps unsure at first, but as soon as his eyes landed on the crying baby, something inside him shifted. Without hesitation, he approached the crib, his gaze softening as he looked down at the child.
"Let me try," Jungkook said, his voice barely above a whisper, but filled with determination.
