The air felt thick with emotions, the weight of the past hour pressing down on everyone. The elders who had woken up not long ago, stood quietly in Taehyung and Jungkook's room, their faces filled with concern and guilt.
Jungkook and Taehyung sat on the bed, their baby resting peacefully between them.
The doctor had left half an hour ago after confirming that the baby was allergic to peanuts. That was the reason behind the sudden rashes and terrifying moment when the baby had struggled to breathe before passing out.
The guilt was unbearable.
If only they had been more careful. If only they had noticed sooner. If only they had paid more attention.
The room was filled with the unspoken words of regret.
After checking the baby thoroughly and giving the necessary injections, the doctor had assured them... the baby would wake up in a few hours.
They were strictly instructed to avoid peanuts in the future. But even with that reassurance, the ache in their hearts did not fade.
The little one was sleeping soundly now, his tiny chest rising and falling steadily, completely unaware of the turmoil around him.
Jungkook and Taehyung sat on either side of him, gently patting his soft hair, their fingers brushing against his delicate skin as if making sure he was truly there, truly safe.
"Taehyung, you two should rest now. We will take our leave," Ye-Jun finally spoke, his voice soft yet filled with worry.
Taehyung barely nodded, his movements stiff, his eyes fixed on the baby. Sensing that neither of them was in the state to speak much, the others exchanged hesitant glances before quietly leaving the room, closing the door behind them.
Jungkook let out a slow, shaky breath. He carefully placed pillows around his pup to ensure he wouldn't roll over before getting up to freshen up.
He stepped into the washroom, turning on the faucet and splashed his face repeatedly. But no matter how much he washed, the exhaustion and pain in his chest did not lessen.
He looked up at the mirror, his reflection staring back at him-puffy, red-rimmed eyes, tear-streaked cheeks and an expression of sheer helplessness.
He sighed, drying his face before stepping out.
His gaze immediately went to the bed.
Taehyung was still sitting there, completely still, his head bowed low, fingers lightly gripping the mattress. He hadn't moved an inch since the others left.
Jungkook's heart clenched painfully at the sight.
He knew exactly what Taehyung was feeling because he felt it too.
The dim light of the bedside lamp cast a soft glow on Taehyung's face, highlighting his delicate features. His skin was pale, his lips slightly parted as he breathed unevenly. His long lashes were wet with unshed tears, his beautiful brown eyes staring blankly down at the baby.
