AN: Thank you to my troopers that have made it this far 🫡. Sorry about the death, again. Didn't expect such uproar.
Merq'ena's ear perked at the faint bird call in the distance. It was one that lived in the rainforest. She kept her eyes closed to hear it a second time. Her ears turned in all directions to be sure to pick up on the subtle sound. This time it was slightly louder and rushed, a sign for her to make haste. The teen rolled from her mat and reached for her new knife. It's handle was still not smooth from use and the blade had not been as finely polished as a well loved one would. The blade was made from a crystal that was found on the island. An honour bestowed to her for her strength.
Merq'ena had never owned a knife like it. It was not as straight and long as her old knife. It was curved to be more of a hook and the handle could rest on her wrist without cutting herself on the blade. The sharp edge was comforting to her. She turned it and stepped into the new sheath that would hug her thigh when fully adjusted. With a quick tug she pulled it up and and tightened the leather to fit her comfortably. The knife fit almost too snugly in the sheath which was a good sign, once it was used more the sheath would soon fit perfectly.
Slinking in the dark she let out a low whistle. The kind that could easily be eaten up from the crushing waves even as it had calmed down during the eclipse. She whistled again for good measure before creeping down the springy bridge. It barely creaked under her weight with each step. She moved with her knees bent and on the balls of her feet as she was taught to do. The girl silently moved using shadows and cautious steps. She could hear the other people sleeping in their tents, steady breaths and calm air.
She checked in the tent of the Sully family. Neytiri and Jake slept at the doorways with their backs to their children. Tuk was curled up close to her mother with her hand clutching the wooden figure of a direhorse in her hand. Merq'ena paused to smile slightly at the sight. It was calming to see them all at peace and safe. Then a loud snore caught her attention. She glanced over to Spider. He was asleep in the middle of the tent with his arms and legs spread out. He didn't have glowing freckles like the Na'vi did so he was more of a dark patch in their home.
The tattooed girl felt her ear twitch at the sight of him. From the lack of Kiri she knew that she had not told Spider of their plans. Which was oddly unexpected. Merq'ena flinched at the sudden turn of Spider's body. He was now facing her. The fog of his mask from his breath occasionally covering his face. He looked so tiny, even next to Tuk. Merq'ena looked down at her hand to see it was gripping the knife's handle.
Kiri's words of him echoed in her ears. Kiri thought of him as family, cared for him like a brother. Merq'ena let go of the knife and studied the oafish way Spider was sprawled on the floor. She cared for Kiri, with all her heart. Would being with her mean that would be related to a human. Would she be ok with that? Merq'ena snapped herself out of her thoughts and stepped back. She needed to think of Viryn.
Merq'ena checked her surroundings before rushing towards the designated dwellings. Her ears moving in all directions as she ducked under the cover of the tent. The ringing of knifes coming out of sheaths filled the air before her eyes adjusted to the harsh shadows. "Its Merq'ena." Neteyam whispered to his brother as she sheathed his own blade.
The girl looked down at the sight of Viryn. She looked better than even the last time she saw her which was earlier that day. The colour of her skin had begun to return and she looked more like she was just sleeping than ill. Merq'ena moved to Viryn's side and placed a hand on her sister's forehead. "We're going to make you better." Merq'ena promised to herself. Neteyam crouched down and gently lifted Viryn's torso against him. His hand lingered under her jaw to feel her heartbeat before gently leaning her head onto the crook of his neck. Using his other arm Neteyam pulled Viryn's legs to him by hooking his forearm under the bend of her knees. The boy slowly lifted Viryn's body from the ground and rested his cheek on her head to make sure she was stable.
