"Phoenix!!" I heard someone scream. Sam. My body would've sagged in relief if it could. He sounded pretty far away, but even just the faint shout gave me hope. The hope evaporated when his next shout came from further away. In a state of panic, I forced my arm to twist through the pain so that my palm was facing upwards and fired a blueish-white ice crystal into the sky, where it hovered like a comet suspended in time. It was weak, and fragments were falling off of it even as I created it, but it was there. And Sam would know exactly what it was if he saw it. I let my arm fall limp and flinched as it landed on a bruise.
"PHOENIX!!" Another shout, significantly closer this time. Icy blue light glowed from the street outside and around the corner dashed Sam, looking frantic and scared out of his mind. Leading him was the fragmented ice crystal I'd sent into the sky. I didn't know how Sam had gotten it to lead him to me and I was in too much agony to care. "Phoenix, oh my god..." He quickly knelt beside me and hugged me close. I couldn't help but gasp in pain and he sat back immediately, taking in my beaten, severely injured, and tied-up form. I saw his eyes flash gold with fury and even in the dimly lit alley, I could see him start to glow with his green demon aura.
"Who the fuck did this to you?" The incubus snarled. I coughed, still unable to force words from my throat. "Phoenix, I want names. Now." I stared at him and tried to speak. All that escaped my throat was a raspy whisper. Realisation dawned on his face. "You can't talk... Can you?" Another shiver ran through my body. Sam frowned then. "Why are you naked?" Instantly, he lit up green again, his eyes flashing with unbridled rage. It was only a moment or two before he calmed down again. He pulled out his phone and began gently stroking my hair as it dialled.
"I need an ambulance. Now." He paused for a moment. "The alley at the back of the Pink Lady Café." Another pause. "They've been beaten up, possibly raped, and they're severely injured and losing a lot of blood. I don't know how long they've been here. Alright. Thank you." Sam ended the call and reached for my wrists, carefully removing the zip ties before doing the same for my ankles. He lifted my head gently and sat beside me, resting it on his lap and he continued to stroke my hair. "I'm sorry, Nix, I know you don't like hospitals," he muttered. "But you wouldn't be able to heal these kinds of injuries at home, even if you could take energy properly." He sat with me in silence, gently scratching my head, which calmed me more than I thought was possible.
"I tried to summon you," Sam mumbled into the quiet. "With your demon name. But summoning doesn't work unless the demon you're trying to summon can actively respond. That's when I started getting really worried." It wasn't long before we heard and saw the lights of an ambulance arrive in the café parking lot. Sam stood and picked me up like a bride, heading over to meet them. He placed me gently on the stretcher they pulled out and I was immediately pushed into the ambulance. A paramedic stepped towards Sam and he growled at her.
"Don't you dare tell me I'm not allowed in there with them." The paramedic looked taken aback for a second.
"Don't worry, sir. You can ride in the ambulance with them. I just wanted to check if you were injured."
"I'm fine." Sam climbed into the ambulance and sat beside me, taking my hand and sending me a comforting smile as an oxygen mask was placed over my face. That was the last thing I saw before I finally passed out from exhaustion.
When I woke up, I was stiff and groggy. I felt like I hadn't moved in days. It took a few moments for my eyes to adjust to the light beaming through the windows of the room I was in. A steady beeping was coming from my left and there was an IV drip attached to my right forearm. I shifted my head slightly to look to my left, ignoring the ache that shot through my neck. Next to the heart rate monitor sat a low table decorated with a couple of get-well cards, along with a conspicuous plain white envelope with writing on it that I didn't understand. I belatedly realised that I didn't have my glasses anymore. I shifted my head to the right and tears welled up in my eyes immediately. There sat Sam in a pretty uncomfortable-looking chair. His clothes were scruffy, his hair was significantly messier than usual, and he looked like he hadn't slept in weeks. He was sat hunched over, resting his elbows on his knees and staring at his hands, so lost in his own thoughts that he hadn't even noticed me wake up. I scrunched the blanket under my right hand to get his attention. I didn't dare speak for fear of the pain it might bring. Sam looked up instantly at the sound and relief flooded through his eyes.
