I could hardly believe I was getting the peace I'd yearned for when I'd moved into the mansion. I'd hoped my life would just calm down after I got out from under my dad's thumb. Instead, I got a territorial and insane devil to deal with, and then a powerful succubus intent on ripping the incubi away from me and my sister. But then, everything settled. No devils, no succubi, only the Hell-on-Earth that was high school and the impending doom of my final exams, which were growing ever closer and driving Mika up the wall. I didn't have the patience to worry. I'd somehow managed to pass the GCSEs I'd taken in England, despite having only done about ten minutes of revision for each subject. I was, for some inane reason, convinced the same would happen with my finals.
Less than five hours ago, Diana had said her final goodbyes to me and departed into the night, leaving me to enjoy the sleepy company of the emerald-eyed incubus I'd fallen in love with. Not that I'd gotten much of a chance to enjoy it before I'd passed out; the seductive succubus had taken every fragment of my energy that she could. But now, the sun was beaming into my bedroom, illuminating Sam's face with a golden glow. I was up ten minutes before my alarms, surprisingly, so I had time to snicker at him as he tried and failed to brush his loose brown hair out of his eyes without even waking up. I dressed for the day and finished just as the first alarm went off. Sam stirred slightly, mumbling something incoherent, before opening an eye to peer at me.
"Nix? You alright?"
"Yeah...? Why wouldn't I be?"
"I've never seen you up before half past six." I shrugged.
"I just slept well, I guess. And the only reason you've ever seen me up at half six at all is because
of school. If I was left to my own devices, I wouldn't be getting up until eleven at the absolute earliest. The only reason I even go to school at this point is for my creative writing classes." I unplugged my phone and headed for the door. "I want breakfast. You coming?"
"Please, I'd never turn down food." The incubus answered. "I can make breakfast for you again if you want?" A small blush ran across his cheeks as he offered, making me smile at him.
"It's up to you. Can you be bothered making food this morning?"
"'Course, as long as it's for you." I blushed then, causing him to smirk and press a kiss to my cheek. That only made my face turn an even brighter pink. Sam chuckled at the reaction he'd caused. "Doofus."
"Hey!"I reached out to give him a playful punch to the arm, but he'd vanished by the time my hand would've made contact with his skin. I could hear him laughing downstairs. Shaking my head, I descended the stairs and greeted James and Damien in the dining room. Mika and Matthew joined soon after, the former yawning widely. After a tentative treaty between Sam and Matthew, the pair worked together in the kitchen, leaving the rest of us to relax and chatter about pointless things. Despite only having known them for a few days, I felt very close to all of the incubi. They were all so different, and yet all of them had such likeable personalities. Even James, who was very irritatingly particular about etiquette and grammar, had a special place in my heart already. Sat beside me, Damien smirked. I felt myself grin as I suddenly realised that, quite ironically, my only friends were literal demons.
"What're you smirking at?" I jumped at Sam's voice as he put a plate down in front of me and sat beside me.
"I just think it's funny that people say 'your demons' as in the little voices in your brain, but... I'm friends with five actual demons." Sam raised an eyebrow, amused, but didn't say anything on the subject.
"You are in school today, right Nix?" Mika asked from the other end of the table. I nodded.
"Unfortunately. At least I've got my writing class today."
"Lisette's really not happy with you, you know."
"She isn't happy with me? What the fuck did I do?"
"She got detention for three days."
"Oh, how awful. Poor baby has to stay an extra half an hour after school for a couple of days. What a bitch." I sneered. "Why'd she even get detention if I'm the one who got fucking suspended?"
"Hey, don't take it out on me." Mika held her hands up in defence. "The principal sided with Lisette, but he at least noticed all the bruises you had. He had the decency to check the security footage for that day and you obviously weren't bruised when you came in. Lisette claimed she'd acted in self-defence, but you know what the school's like with violence."
"Yeah, they don't give a shit because they don't wanna waste their precious funding on things like student safety when it could go on the fucking football team."
"Yeah, well... It'll be over in a couple of months."
