I froze up, too scared to move. I recognised that voice. Memories of it filled my brain. Coarse and malicious, Malix's voice echoed around in my head, causing me to tremble in fear. Sam, who was apparently on high alert as well, carefully picked me up and sped down the stairs before setting me down gently.
"Don't worry. I'll keep you safe." Sam said quietly.
"Are you sure? Are you REALLY sure?" Quickly, Sam pushed me behind him, placing himself firmly between me and the front doors. They swung open with a loud creak, revealing something I definitely didn't expect. With red skin, white hair, yellow eyes and holding a pistol, he looked like a middle-aged incarnation of Satan. Beside him stood a similar woman with long brown hair, and both of them were clad in blood-covered clothes. Something told me these were the 'punks' that had attacked the incubi in the woods yesterday.
"Awww, what's the matter, boys? You really didn't think I wouldn't find you, did you?" Malix taunted them, laughing. Sam growled.
"I hoped you would, you piece of-"
Bang.
"Sam!" I cried. With no warning, Malix raised his gun and fired it straight at Sam. But Sam didn't fall. Nobody moved, unsure of why a bullet hadn't rammed into Sam's face. Malix looked furious and started pulling the trigger over and over again, aiming at nothing in particular. Blank shots were all that fired and Sam placed his hand on my arm and pushed me further behind him, more determined to protect me than ever.
"Why the fuck won't you work?!" Malix shouted.
"This place is protected," Damien said sharply.
"What did you say, shrimp?!"
"This place has a seal, protecting it from hell-borne magic." The incubus elaborated calmly.
"What the fuck is that supposed to mean?!" Malix shouted again. He snarled and threw his gun at Sam, who was forced to grab me and dive to the floor in order to stop it from hitting either of us. The gun bounced and hit the wall in front of the stairs, dissolving into a black flame when it landed and vanishing into thin air.
"The previous owner had this place protected by magic, Malix." Matthew snapped angrily. I looked up in confusion, as did Mika.
"He did?" Mika asked him. James smiled, looking immensely relieved.
"It would seem your grandfather had some sort of protective barrier around this house. From the looks of it, it only disables hell-borne magic." Malix's hands tightened into fists.
"Then what's stopping me from dragging your asses out and shooting you then?!" I cowered further behind Sam, scared out of my mind. Malix glared around the room. He smirked at Mika, who was still sitting on the steps, and then his cat-like eyes fixated on each of the incubi's faces until he reached Sam's. Then noticed my unfamiliar face peeking out from around his arm. He smirked, staring at me. It was obvious I was terrified, and I cursed myself for not being braver, but as Malix let a wicked smirk paint his face, I found myself shrinking backwards. "Oh, that's cute. You've got yourself a human bitch. What's your name, sweetheart?" I could hear the malevolence in his voice and I stayed quiet, too afraid to answer. "Aww, I'm not that scary~ Why don't you come here and I'll prove it? I can show you a better time than the bigshot sex demon you're hiding behind."
"Touch them and you die," Sam growled.
"Hey, play nice, Sam!" I could hear the evil cackle behind his words. In an instant, Malix shoved Sam roughly aside and grabbed me by my hair, forcing me to yell out in pain. He looked me up and down before smirking and licking his lips.
"I think I'll enjoy you..."
"SAM! ERIK!" Erik rushed at Malix and punched him square in the jaw, causing him to let me go. Sam caught me gently as I fell backwards, then passed me off to Erik and stood to face Malix, who was now laughing shrilly. Erik pulled me back towards the group of incubi as Sam and Malix began circling each other like sharks.
"I warned you..." Sam snarled at Malix. "Touch them, and I will kill you."
"C'mon, Sam! You and me! Right here! Let's go!"
"You had it coming, asswipe!" Sam yelled back. But before either could attack the other, Malix's companion put a firm hand on Malix's shoulder.
"That's enough, Malix!" She snapped.
"Who the fuck do you think you are, woman?!" Malix lashed.
"The girl who's going to help you kill them. Just not now." She replied calmly. Malix wasn't very calm, however.
"Not now?!"
"There's five of them and two of us. Even if we come back with the gang, they could have the place surrounded by human police."
"Then... WE SHOOT EVERYONE!!"
"THINK! If we kill everyone, then we'll be hunted, and makeshift paladins will try to exorcise us."
