After classes, I decide to go sit on the rooftop of the Royal One.

"What a view..." I say as I look out into the distance.

"You're here."

I whip around to see Soi standing behind me, a case in hand.

"Am I... not supposed to be?"

"No, but that's kinda my spot."

"Oh." I pause. "Can we... share the spot?"

"..."

"...Ok then, I'll go."

I get up to leave.

"Wait," he says, "...It's ok. You can stay. Just... don't... say anything."

I sit back down and nod. Soi pulls out a trumpet from his case, and begins to play. I don't recognize the song, like yesterday, but it's beautiful. I wasn't sure who it was, but I sure wasn't expecting the mysterious Trumpeter to be Soi.

When it ends, I give him a small round of applause.

"That was...beautiful."

Soi looks at me and blushes a little.

"You really think so?"

"Yeah...I've never heard anything like it! Other than yesterday of course."

"Oh..."

"...Do you play here every day?"

"Yeah..."

"Can I come and listen tomorrow too then?"

"Sure." He shoots me a small smile.

The next day

I walk to school by myself from the forest, as always.

Fleshy humans art our food...

I find the school anthem repulsive. To these demons, humans are just myths, but to me, humans are just weak demons without magic that can't fly. I've never wanted to eat one, it feels like cannibalism.

"Good morning, Soi! What are they doing?"

He shrugs. "Something about not being able to study?"

I sigh. "I feel bad for them. I've always been pretty good at studying."

This is a bold faced lie. I can only be considered smart in Netherworld subjects, I was hopeless in human specific subjects, other than practical stuff and anatomy. Though that's probably because of how I was raised.

He nods. "I've never been the best, but if I study I usually pass with a good score.

"Yeah, I-"

I turn to one of the hallways in our homeroom. Professor Balam is there, peering around the corner.

Why's he here!?

He looks at me, and I avert my gaze and get back to conversation with Soi. But after a minute, he looks back and is shocked. I look to see Balam and Kalego... fist-bumping.

"Talk about unexpected..."

"Right???"

A few days later

The whole class is studying together...

"Should we join them? I mean, join them without actually 'joining them', so to say. You know what I mean."

"Sure."

We head up to the blackboard and I pick up a piece of chalk.

"Alright, what subject should we focus on?"

"Um... Mythical Zoology. I'm not the best at it."

Huh. Ironic!

"Got it! Let's start with humans..."

We both end up learning a lot, and by the end we're both confident we'll do ok in the tests.

There is one thing that bothers me, though.

I have to take 6 tests. One for each subject, and the end-of-terminus.

Hopefully the questions are on stuff I'll remember.

A couple days later

"I will now return the tests you took the other day." Kalego says.

While most of our class are panicking, Soi and I are perfectly calm. He did well studying from what I saw, and I know I'll get 85% on each test, just slightly above average.

Wait... 85% on every test!? I FORGOT TO CHANGE IT UP A BIT! Craaaap. That's gonna get some attention.

The previous yelling from my classmates has turned to excited cheering. None failed, and some even ranked up! Good for them!

"Iruma."

"Y-Yes?"

We all crowd in to see what Kalego's going to say.

"Out of all the scores in the exams, yours improved the most. You didn't quite reach a new rank, though."

Iruma looks really happy.

"Um professor... I'm going out for a bit!"

And he dashes off.

A while later, there's a crowd around the outside board. I decide to go see where the others ranked.

"Uh, excuse me..."

I turn around. Balam is behind me, but his hair is different. It's much much shorter now, with a buzz cut along the sides.

"Okami, right?"

"Yes..."

"Can I talk to you for a minute?"

Shit.
