"The Trickster Plan is an attempt to demonstrate what the future of the Netherworld may bring. In the long run, the Netherworld will greatly benefit from discovering and nurturing these young minds. The missing King Derkila once uttered these words: 'The flowers bloom bright, and living things battle for survival. Thunder booms and rain pours. The Netherworld is beautiful. And yet, in its current state, it is also very boring. Make the flowers fight, and the living things bloom. Swallow up the thunder and the rain, with ideas that outwit both strength and knowledge. Ally yourself with change. A demon must be greedy.' The Netherworld is made of new ideas. It is being reborn right here, right now. We hereby announce the start of the Trickster Plan!"
Sullivan's met by a round of applause.
So some of us children will be chosen as potential candidates... I need to make sure I don't stand out.
A spotlight is put on a piano as someone begins to play.
Is that... Kalego!?
I lift my veil to get a better look.
It is!
I never thought I'd see Kalego at a party!
...Now I want to play the piano...
"Excuse me, Lady?"
I turn around and see a demon I recognize. The grandson of Lady Levi, Leiji Leviathan. In reality, he's the same rank as me, though he won't ever know that.
"Yes?"
He holds out his hand.
"Care to dance?"
What's he- oh, right, it's a dance!
I smile back politely.
"I'd love to."
We head over to a less crowded area and begin.
"Leiji, is it? Why'd you ask me?"
"You're not allowed to disclose the identities of others at a Deviculum like this, Lady." He replies.
RBF much?
"It's fine. No one else heard me anyways, and it's a little obvious who you are at this point. But besides that, what reason do you have for asking me to dance?"
"Straightforward, I see. I admire that. You're the only candidate for Demon King I don't know anything about, that's why I asked you to dance."
"I guess that makes se... wait. What?"
What did he say...?
"Was I not clear?"
"N-No, you were clear, but... I... I'm a candidate for Demon King?"
I must've heard wrong, there's no way-
"What do you mean? Of course you are. The only 6 teens here are all candidates for Demon King. You're the only one who came anonymously, though, so you're sort of a mystery candidate. You should know that."
HUH!?
WHO THE HELL RECOMMENDED ME AND WHY!?
"I... I see. Sorry, I forgot about that. I'm not really that interested in it, though I guess since I have the chance I'll give it a shot."
"Sure. Just know that I won't lose to you or anyone else."
"Then I'll give it my all!"
As IF.
I first want to figure out how the hell I got recommended!
"It's also first come first serve, but I'm thinking since you clearly know nothing I'll tell you a little about who everyone is going for."
He motions to an area a little far from us, but I can still see clearly.
"You see that barricade? Behind it is the upper deity, Princess Shura. She's the main target of the night. If she were to give even a word of recommendation to anyone they'd pretty much be set."
The princess!?
Fate's cruel... I hope she doesn't think I knew about this when I approached her...
"Before we get to that, though," Leiji continues, "I would like to know a little about who I'm going up against."
"That's fair."
I lift my veil up in a way that only Leiji can see my face.
"My name's Okami, I'm in the same class as Iruma, who I'm sure you know about. My rank is also He."
"I see... are you from a noble family?"
"...Technically, yes."
"What? What do you mean, technically?"
"I mean, technically, yes!"
He looks extremely confused.
"...Wha-"
"Well, that's that, I'm not telling you any more!"
I smooth the veil back over my face and increase the potency of the enchantment, nudging him in the direction of Iruma and Amelie.
"Oh, look! There's Ame- the Azazel heir! She's the same rank as you, right? Go talk to her. Okay, good evening~!" I quickly say.
I feel bad for interrupting Iruma and Amelie's dance time, but it's survpival of the fittest in a political battlefield like this, and this was necessary for my survival. They'll live.
It was adorable, seeing them dance together, though. I kinda wish-
I feel my face flush red, and internally thank my indecisiveness over masks for making me choose a full face veil.
What am I thinking!?
Even if there was even a small chance of that actually happening, that's not what I should be thinking about right now!
Focus! People are watching my every move now.
The more powerful people here who've noticed me haven't been doing the greatest job of watching me discreetly. I can feel the eyes on me as I mill around, unsure of what to do.
I never practiced for this...
My proper Deviculum training for dances revolved around having an escort, so to be honest I was a little relieved when Leiji approached me.
Unfortunately, I'm now officially one of the centers of attention, because there are only 6 teens at this Deviculum, including me.
Man, I wish I was up there playing the piano instead of Kalego. That would be great...
Especially if...
NO! Stop thinking about that!!
