"The men should be here soon," Kat announced, clapping her hands to get everyone's attention.
"Places, guys. Let's get this perfect, OK?"
The bridal party moved into position, rehearsing again.
Just as Ariel glanced up, Aiden walked through the door with Cole and the others.
Their eyes met.
For a moment, time stilled.
Ariel kept her expression neutral, but inside, her thoughts were racing.
"OK, he's coming over here," Kat whispered.
Aiden approached.
"Hi, Aiden," Ariel greeted him automatically.
Then, without even thinking, she turned to Kat and introduced him.
"Kat, meet my fiancé, Aiden Baldwin."
Kat smiled, crossing her arms.
"So, you're the guy who's hard to get a hold of," she teased.
"Cole wouldn't have anyone else as his best man."
She extended her hand.
"It's a pleasure to meet you. I've heard so much about you."
Aiden shook her hand.
Kat was beautiful—slender with a rich dark complexion, deep brown eyes, and naturally curly hair that framed her face.
She stood about 5'5", with a few faint freckles dusting her cheeks.
Her heritage was a blend of two worlds.
Her father was Black, and her mother was of Indian descent—one of the first interracial couples in their society to defy the rigid rules of matchmaking.
Aiden had done a background check on Cole's closest associates, just to get a sense of who he would be surrounded by.
Kat had passed the test.
She seemed genuine.
Easygoing.
Aiden lightened up slightly, but what threw him off was how Ariel was acting like nothing had happened.
No tension. No awkwardness.
Just... normal.
Why?
He was confused.
They started rehearsing again, this time with the pastor present, and it went smoothly.
After Rehearsal
Aiden followed the group into the reception room, where tables were set with food and refreshments.
