"Aiden watched as she walked away, his chest tightening with guilt. If anyone were to find out that he had kissed the fair lady—had defiled her with such reckless abandon—it would ruin her.

He knew better. He was raised to be a gentleman, to uphold honor above all else. And yet, when it came to Karlie, all reason abandoned him. She had done something to him, something he couldn't explain. No matter how much he tried to fight it, to keep his distance, he was powerless against the pull she had over him.

He ran a hand through his hair and let out a deep sigh. I have to do better. I have to stay away from her. But even as he told himself that, he knew it was a lie.

With one last glance toward the ballroom, he turned on his heel and left. He could only hope she would find the note he had slipped her.
