Anthony arrived at Karlie's farm, stepping out of his carriage with a deep breath. He wasn't sure what kind of reception he would get, but he needed to see her. This was their future, after all. They had to at least talk about it.
He knocked on the door, and one of the house staff answered. "Is Miss Coldwater available?"
The maid hesitated before nodding. "She's in the garden, sir."
Karlie sat on the wooden bench beneath the large oak tree, her hands folded in her lap. She wasn't expecting him, but somehow, she knew this conversation was coming. She kept her gaze on the flowers in front of her as he approached.
"May I sit?" he asked.
She gave him a small nod.
For a moment, neither of them spoke. The weight of unspoken truths hung between them.
"I wanted to see how you were doing," Anthony finally said. "It's been a week, and I know this wasn't... what you wanted."
Karlie looked down at her hands. "It's not about what I want, Anthony. It never was."
He sighed, leaning forward. "I know. But that doesn't mean I don't care about you. This is a lot, and I just want to make sure you're okay."
She glanced at him then. He looked genuine, concerned even. And it made her feel guilty. Anthony wasn't a bad man. He was just the wrong man.
"I'll be fine," she whispered.
He reached out, gently placing his hand over hers. "You can be honest with me, Karlie."
Her throat tightened. She couldn't. She couldn't tell him that her heart wasn't his to have—that it never would be.
Instead, she forced a small smile. "I know."
Anthony studied her, sensing her hesitation but choosing not to press. "I won't rush you into wedding plans. Take the time you need."
She exhaled in relief. "Thank you."
He nodded, standing up. "I'll see you soon, Karlie."
As he walked away, she watched him go, feeling the heaviness in her chest grow. She knew he meant well, but kindness didn't change fate.
She was still trapped.
