"Amber lay on her bed, gazing at the finished paintings she had worked so hard on—one for Karlie and the other for Andy. She smiled, hoping they would love them.
A knock on her door interrupted her thoughts. Her lady's maid stepped inside. "Miss Sterling, Mr. Baldwin is on the phone for you."
"Transfer it here, please," she said, sitting up.
She picked up the receiver. "Hey, you," she greeted cheerfully.
"Hi, sweetheart," Andy's voice came through, but he sounded tense. "You're going to need to come to the country as soon as possible. Karlie needs you."
"Karlie and her family have been humiliated by the Fairviews. Apparently, Anthony has a bastard son. Aiden found out and confronted him about it. They got into an altercation. It's buzzing all over town. Everybody's talking about it."
Amber sat up straight. "Babe, please slow down. Anthony what? Are you kidding me right now?"
"No, sweetheart. I wish I was."
She exhaled, running a hand through her hair. Amber wasn't raised in high society, but even she knew how much shame this could bring to a family.
"Okay, I'll be there first thing in the morning, baby."
"You can't come tonight?"
"I could, but I need to calm down first, or I might kill Anthony."
She took a deep breath. "How is Aiden?"
"He's well, my love. But you know how he feels about Karlie. This whole mess started because Aiden had Nick, our head of security, dig up dirt on Anthony. He didn't trust him. But we both know the truth—he just wanted to make sure Karlie was in safe hands... even if he can't have her."
Amber wasn't so sure she agreed.
"Digging up dirt on Anthony was a low blow. Sure, Anthony is sleazy, but what good came out of it? Two families are now destroyed."
