[The Boy's True Father – Part 2]
The explosive yawn was paired with the lazy motion of stretching as the 15-year-old teenager walked through the doors of the café that had barely any customers. The barista looked up with the attempt to offer a greeting of welcome, but Luca simply made quick eye contact and a wave of dismissal, making a beeline to the only occupied table at the café.
"What's so special that you had to drag my ass out for?" Luca demanded as he helped himself to the seat across the man who he viewed like a father.
"Birthday surprise." Dante answered shortly, taking a look at the ruffled, unkept appearance of his nephew as Luca immediately plastered his forehead on the café table, intelligent blue eyes slowly closing against the world. "Let me guess, you were sleeping when I called."
"Post-sleep nap." Luca answered with his eyes still closed. "Don't wake me up until any of the following occurs: 1. A meteor strikes this world and kills everyone; or 2. Aunt Lady and Aunt Trish finally find out about how much property damage you did in the last mission."
"There better be a number 3 on that list: when Nero comes."
"I don't know who's that, and I don't care." Luca answered, but no further protest came as he drifted back to sleep.
Luca wasn't sure how long passed as he dozed off into a nap once again, but found himself sliding back to reality at the feel of a new presence at the table together with him and his uncle. It appeared that this new presence was also someone his uncle knew well, because the men were sharing casual conversation over Luca's sleeping self –though casual was probably not the best way to describe the current situation.
"Fuck you, Dante. If you didn't keep your lips shut, I wouldn't have gone through all that mess in Redgrave. Was it really that hard to go 'hey, I know who your dad is. If someone comes asking you for your arm, that's gonna be him.'?" The man was caught cursing as Luca roused back from sleep.
"Hey hey, don't blame it all on me. I didn't know he was going to tear off your arm. He doesn't exactly get father-of-the-year awards, but I didn't take him as someone who goes around tearing arms off people." Dante's answer was made with soft defense, but the conversation was clearly interrupted when Luca finally straightened from his lean against the café table, yawning and stretching. "Anyhow, the little bastard's awake."
Luca had been called Little Bastard too many times to bother protesting. Besides, having lived the past 15 years being referred to as Little Bastard by his uncle was something that had naturalized over time, and Luca viewed it more like a pet name more than anything at this point.
"What time is it? Is it time for dinner?" Luca asked with another yawn, ignoring his uncle as he allowed his eyes to sweep over the stranger sharing the table with them.
The stranger seemed just like any other demon hunter out there; an impressive sword leaned against the table and gun holster –with the gun still snugly strapped in –on the table beside the cup of coffee at sat in front of the stranger. There was a head of natural white hair and blue eyes on the stranger – traits that Luca instantly gave him suspicions since they were not common natural colours.
"You snored an hour away. And before you ask, this kid's name is Nero. Remember that mission in Redgrave that accidentally lasted one month and Trish 'lost' my father's sword? We picked up this kid from that mission, and both Trish and Lady thought it was good idea to introduce him to you as a birthday surprise." Dante answered, gesturing to the stranger.
"What about him that works as a birthday surprise?" Luca asked, reaching over to his uncle's cup of coffee and downing the whole thing without asking for permission –not that any was required in the first place. The boys in the Devil May Cry joint took each other's belongings so often that it was common knowledge that everything they owned was shared property.
