Being a teenager and having to go to school during the week was bad enough, but having to go to school on an Saturday early in the morning was even worse. It was any teenager's worse nightmare.
Dozens of students whose last names began with the letters of A-G, sat quietly in a classroom and were taking an SAT prep test.
Phoebe sat near Miguel and Demetri. She couldn't concentrate properly on the practice test in front of her as her eyes felt very heavy and droopy. Yawning twenty million times didn't help either.
The arson attack on Johnny's car kept her awake late last night. When her parents came home to the remnants of the car, they asked a lot of questions, so did the firemen and so did the police. Johnny never came back from driving the motorbike, she hadn't seen him since then. The only one of her friends to know the events of the apartment complex was Miguel, as soon after their Sensei left, he arrived on his bicycle to witness the firemen and the fire.
The girl glanced back to him, he sat next to Demetri at the back of the classroom behind her.
Miguel seemed distracted from the previous night's events with what he witnessed at the LaRusso home and then what he came home to. He had barely answered any questions. He sighed quietly and let his pencil clatter from his hand to the table.
Demetri noticed this as well, "What's going on? The test is almost over."
The distracted boy picked up his yellow pencil and began answering a question, "It's just a practice test. Relax."
"Easy for you to say. You already have a girlfriend."
"What does that have to do with anything?" Miguel asked, leaning in towards his friend,
Demetri explained his logic, "I gotta do well on these, so I do well on the actual test, so I get into a good college, which'll lead to a good internship, then a high paying job. Then, after a couple promotions, I should have enough confidence to get a super hot girl. You got the karate thing. I gotta play the long game." He heard the teacher clear his throat. Glancing up, the boy saw teacher giving him a stern look. He smiled and went back to his test.

Moments later when the bell rang signifying the end of the test, Miguel exited the classroom along with the dozens of other students, saying bye to Demetri and Phoebe.
Just then, Sam approached him from leaning against a locker waiting for him. She held her SAT prep workbook, waiting until the teacher was ready for the next group of students, "Hey you!" She hugged him and they shared a sweet kiss.
"Hey." He greeted unenthusiastically.
"What's with the doom and gloom? I'm sure you crushed it again." Sam smiled holding his hands in hers.
"I don't know. I was a little distracted this time."
"What? Why?"
Miguel contemplated telling her what he saw last night in terms of what he saw at her house, but held himself back. "Uh...the tournament. Less than two months to get ready for it. I don't have a lot of time to prepare so..."
"Well, you probably still did better than me. The kid in front of me definitely didn't shower. Made me forget how to calculate the volume of a sphere. Though he did help me remember the word malodorous." She said, letting out a small chuckle at the end.
Miguel smiled, half-heartedly, "So what were you up to last night?"
"Just a family dinner." She replied.
