"Hey boss, we've got two hybrids coming in

"Hey boss, we've got two hybrids coming in. ETA three minutes out," Christopher 'Bang Chan' Chan, my assistant, notified upon entering my office. His tail hung limply behind him, clearly upset and thinking of more hurt hybrids coming through our doors. "Paramedics are coming in hot, with full lights and sirens."

Quickly jumping up from my office chair, the two of us hurriedly made our way towards the hospital side of Sanctuary, the hybrid shelter and hospital I had created and funded. I was very proud of what I'd been able to create, with Sanctuary being the most equipped hybrid-only hospital and shelter in Samta; we helped provide a safe place for hybrids who had nowhere else to go.

"Do we know what's happened to them?" I inquired as we raced down the stairs instead of waiting for the lifts, my heart racing from adrenaline and concern. I hated hearing that hybrids had been injured, but working in the industry I do, it unfortunately happens every day.

"All I know is that there was a hit and run involving a female hybrid and a child," Bang Chan spoke, wincing at the change in my scent with a whine that escaped his throat

"All I know is that there was a hit and run involving a female hybrid and a child," Bang Chan spoke, wincing at the change in my scent with a whine that escaped his throat.

Not wanting to stress him out further, as we arrived at the entry to the Emergency Department, I reached up and wound my fingers into his brown hair and quickly began scratching his floppy ears. I smiled at seeing his tail wagging happily from the attention. Being a beagle hybrid, Bang Chan loved any sort of praise but responded best to a good ear scratch, no matter how long, or short, it was.

Bang Chan was one of our first patients to come through Sanctuary's doors shortly after we opened, and since then he hadn't left. The poor hybrid had been the victim of a brutal beating in one of the neighbouring towns that didn't have the same progressive view of hybrid rights as my city, Samta, did. He had begged me to let him work here, and after seeing how he was good at organising and helping me with different tasks, Bang Chan became my assistant. The one thing he asked was that we never call him by his official name, just that he wanted to always be known as Bang Chan – I still, to this day, didn't know the story of why he hated his name and I vowed to never ask.
