Belle was frustrated The Colonies were a far cry from France, Spain or even Jamaica. For months she had been trying to set up another orphanage, she had succeeded in Spain, and was gaining way with Italy but under the rule of King George, she had been hitting walls. The Colonies and England had been blocking her.
"The English and with their stick shoved so far...." Belle cursed in French
"Belle, what ever is the matter?" John sighs at her.
"Another refusal. The turn their backs because I am French and and unwed mother, mainly French." she threw the letter down as the twins carried on and William looked confused.
"I am sure that's no the case." John rebuffed.
"Papa, I think Belle might be right. I've observed such interactions when your not around they never really acknowledge her." William agreed with his governess on the odd occasion that he either attended an event or watched from the stairs when he was supposed to be asleep. John scowled at the information.
"A independent, wealthy, unmarried French woman and rather than respect, they ignore unless your present. Barbaric." Belle carried on with eating and the matter was raised no more.
--------
Another social gathering where Belle kept her eye on the young Earl becoming slowly acquainted with society. She saw John dance with another eligible young woman and he looked very uncomfortable. When the dance finished more hopeful mothers tried to swarm him. She chuckled and made her way over.
"Your Grace." she cut in making everyone turn to her. "I apologise for the interruption. But you did promise me the next dance." she offered and John relaxed and offered his hand to her.
"How remise of me. I ask for your forgiveness." Belle took it and everyone backed away as the two began to dance. "It seems we haver a knack for saving each other. A match made in heaven of sorts." John jested with her.
"We do work well together, don't we?" Belle smiled at him and the wheels began to turn in Lord Johns head. It was kind of a secret only know to the few that Lord John did favour the intimate company of men and his heart held reserved for one he could not have. But that did not mean he did not care for his late wife. In a way he did love her, not in the way many people expect but relationships in their time were rarely for anything of love. If that happened then it would be amazing but it wasn't built for that.
John thought about it. He never really wanted to marry in the first place but did and it was a happy marriage to a certain extent. If he married then he would stop being bothered by every hopeful young girls mother and be able to enjoy a party or a gathering. There were a stirring of rumours which would stop. But also he would be able to unite the siblings, though unknown to each other. He care for all of them more than life itself. But beyond those reasons the most important. It would be his choice.
For Belle were more selfish reasons that if she would even agree. She would have the extra security a marriage would bring her. No longer shunned in that respect, she could continue her great work. But before he acted on anything, he would have to speak with William.
-----
Jamie was brought a letter and he opened it over breakfast, reading over the correspondence. Claire noticed the change in his demeanour.
"Is everything okay?" Claire questioned
"It is a letter from Lord John, informing me of his impending nuptials to Belle. He asks as the children's father for my blessing in wishing him a happy marriage." Everyone glanced at one another "He goes on to say that has also spoken with William who is thrilled at the news." Jamie looked up to his wife and daughter.
"So, history is playing out. The two will marry." Claire voiced
"I guess so." he lowered down the letter "It does confuse me that he sought to marry again, knowing him as I do, he's never sought marriage, the only reason he did it last time was..." he trailed off
"Either way, by the two of them marrying it will change a lot of things for the better. The things they will do not only together but individually it still awes me to this day." Brianna shook her head in amazement her she was going to go to the wedding of her idol.
---------
Brianna sat with Jemmy on her lap. Jamie was talking with John as he had being doing a lot since the invitation to the wedding had arrived. Rinette and Grayson were running around happily till John set them with their nursemaid. Jamie took his place next to Claire and the wedding began. As the music played William escorted Belle down the aisle down to his Papa. History played out as Belle and John made their vows to one another in front of family and friends and sealed it with a kiss.
As Brianna had stated the portrait of Belle and the twins was only the first of many. John and Belle though not throughly in love with each other unlike Claire and Jamie did care for one another and did as society expected of them. Within eighteen months of their marriage James Grey was born and following him was Anastasia, Jacob and Rebekah. As history Brianna learned, Belle went onto expand and do great things all with the aide of her husband Lord John Grey.
